» Jhaerlyn - Rangers and Roleplaying games :)

Mr. Martinez, I first want to say that your articles rock.

At the moment I'm foaming at the mouth, so to speak on the Middle EartOnlinene Forums ... on the subject of how Rangers should be handled in the game ... and honestly, I'm not too picky about how it's handled in the game... but I don't know why i get inordinately bent out of shape by people that say only Dunedain can be Rangers ... but they seem to mean that only Dunedain are capable of being rangers, that rangers is this special elite thing that only descendents of lost numenor can handle ... and I find it irking ...

so, here I find your articles ... and it's implied there, too ...but I'm seeing something now that maybe I was blinding myself to. The fact is Tolkien is looking at Ranger's as a profession ... the profession of those men given the charge of guarding the king's land ...as you put it in your article thegns etc ... so what would you say to my charge that the reason Tolkien makes the special point of note between wanderers and the Rangers, isn't a cultural one, but a sociopolitical one ... these wanderers were the protector's of the Realm of Arnor ... those given charge to ensure that when the king came, he'd have something to come back to ...
