Hitler made Paulus a Field Marshall because a
German Field Marshall had never surrendered.
Hitler expected Paulus to take his own life.

Thank you for the extra detail in your two messages. Re the 4th July plot, I still think the fictionalised version by Kirst gives the most gripping account of what must have been a terrible tragedy caused solely by the movement of that briefcase!
Re Paulus' promotion, I have always wondered at Hitler's apparent hatred of all the values that the old officer corps stood for and yet, in the ultimate, he called on their code of honour to be followed in the case of Rommel, and of Paulus. Good or bad, the traditions of a country and its institutions are what make a coherent society and give a nation identity. Thankfully, it seems that what he destroyed has been replaced by the strengths that have always been in the German people despite the militarism that infected them for so long.
