» Wolvie27 - I have dreams of making games. Do you?

I've been playing games ever since they came on floppy disks and you had to keep working with the two B: drive slots. Those were some interesting text based games, but nothing like today's muds. Since those days I've always wondered what makes a computer 'tick' and how I can get it to go along to my beat.

So, I've been searching long and hard to learn how to do that, but as of yet I haven't really found much. I'm geussing this is since I've never been much for resources and had to watch others work with their computers all the time up until just a few years ago. I haven't been able to learn how to program, except for a failed attempt at Qbasic (the local library lost the old microsoft programming text I had found there). In the past before I had the chance to really explore computers, I'd write down story lines and draw up maps for Nintendo games, made my own set of playing cards, a few board games, a comic strip, and a few short stories. So, here I am watching all these great games march by me on computers, saying to myself "I've got what I think are a few cool ideas for games, but no way to actually make them." Then I bumped into MUDs.

So its 3 years after I discovered MUDing and I discover Suite101. Lo and behold the editor for the MUD section has developed her own code base from scratch I read, not to mention her own mud! This gets the ideas going in my head again, and then I'm reading the 47 Medieva notes, alot talking about programing and such. This must mean other MU* developers drop by here too!

And this all adds up to, I could ask for advice here about where to begin in creating games for others! I would love some kind of help article about what it takes to become a developer hopeful.

Eventually, I'm gonna head off to college when I'm done highschool and see what I can make of myself in the world of Computer Science. For now I wet my apetite with the scraps I can pull off the internet. I wonder if there are other severely novice programers out there like me. Would you help my curiosity and dreams turn into actual games?

The easiest MU* programming language I have bumped into, save perhaps various custom/original ones, has to be LPC. LPMuds are unbelievably customisable, offering tremendous detail and potential for creative expansion.

If you have any experience with the C programming language (including of course C++) then LP will be a piece of cake. And even if you don't, read a primer on C either in a book (the "C in 24 hours" series of books are really good) or on the WWW (try a Yahoo! search on "c tutorial"). You should be good to go in a matter of days, if you work hard, or a matter of weeks if you go slow.

There are lots of LP Muds out there, one that I can think of off the bat that is still in beta & looking for coders is called "Phyndria." I don't have the URL offhand, but go to mudconnect.com and "Search" for the keyword Phyndria, it'll get you there.

» KaVir - Dantessa's mud

I've heard you talking about your mud on a number of occasions, Dina, so I thought I'd take a look. I assume Cardea is yours? It looks well thought out and has some interesting features, but I must admit I'm a little confused - according to Cardea's entry on The Mud Connector, the mud was created in January 1988. From the posts of yours that I've read, however, I got the impression that your is mud relatively new (and from looking at your webpage it appears that you weren't even using computers back in 1988). Am I looking at the right mud, or did you just create the webpages for Cardea and your own mud is something completely separate?

Sorry to sound so nosy, but I'm always interested in checking out original muds, as well as keeping track of general development within the mudding community. I can't believe I missed a mud which predates Diku, LP and TinyMUD - and is almost as old as AberMUD!

I'm not sure where you lot got the idea I created Cardea, I am just one of the developers, as I've stated many times, I develop a MUD, I didn't write the engine.

I was indeed using computers in 1988, just not PCs. I started on Apples before MAC came out, then on MAC, and migrated to PC later.

Ah okay, my mistake. So is the 1988 date correct? I've written a little about the history of muds on my website:

www.kavir.dial.pipex.com/muds.html

And I've also contributed to the Mud Timeline:

http://www.legendmud.org/raph/gaming/mud...

So I'm always interested to find out more about older muds.

Development began then, the MUD did not go live for several years later.

Wow, that's almost 13 years in development - and you're still in beta! I must say that makes a pleasant change from most muds, which open to the public immediately (using a stock codebase) before even bothering to code anything original.

My condolences on the situation with Achaea. I think it's ludicrous that a mud which only opened in September 1997 should be able to force you to change from a programming language you've been using for almost 10 years longer than it has (to be honest I didn't even know Vortex was that old).

I am a college student and i have been mudding for about 5 years on and off. I have been wanting to get a good code base to play with but i can find one to use with windows. I am taking C++ and i am starting to ask on some muds to see if they need a coder. But i would love to be able to work on a new mud with someone. If anyone wants to email me my addy is duhmonkeysuncle@yahoo.com

I will be checking back in here every few days.
So untill then.
