» turbobullet - What backhand is better - two-handed or one?

Most of the women pros on TV have a two-handed backhand and many of the men, plus most juniors I see playing. The exceptions are maybe Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf, when she was playing. Is it better to use a two-handed backhand or one-handed?

In response to message posted by turbobullet:

The backhand is not a simple stroke, but for some it is their best shot. Most juniors coming up now are taught the two-handed backhand because the second hand gives you more strength and power. It also limits your reach because of the second hand, so you need to have good footwork to get to the balls. There are also many advantages to having a one-handed backhand, especially if you are able to perfect a mean slice that stays low to the ground. The best players now have both a two-handed backhand for driving the ball, and a one-handed backhand for low slice and variety.

The One handed backhand is much harder to learn and to master than the 2-handed in my own opinion. You have to be a lot stronger in the forearm to drive the ball hard with one hand. I feel the biggest problem is being able to compensate for swinging late or early. It is tough to adjust the racquet with one hand, but if you practice enough you will get it. If you do go with the 2-hander I think Sandra is right, keep a one handed for slice. It allows for a lot more variety!

It also depends on your game style and other factors. If you are short like me the One hander is tough. To attack a one-hander they say to hit the ball high with a lot of topspin, if you are short then balls get higher a lot quicker!

Jeff Cooper over at About.com's tennis site has written a nice article about advantages and disadvantages of both. smile
