7TH HEAVEN's Identity Crises: Morality vs. Reality,7TH HEAVEN'Read the article this discussion is about

» Jaynee - Seventh Heaven comments.... I'm a big fan of 7th Heaven. I'm not really sure why - it had bad actors doing bad acting, over-the-top schmaltzy dialogue, endings that are too neat and pat, and has a family of kids that are too nice to each other.HOWEVER, being a 32 year old woman, I can still see the value of the show. And so I tune in every week that I can. Sure, within two scenes you know the "lesson" for the week (lying is bad, gossip is wrong, anger isn't good, stealing is a crime). They are basic in their teaching, yes, but they still manage to teach the lesson in their 60-minute time slot, whether it's Shakespeare or not. Not all television can be as engrossing as the top rated shows on television ("ER" comes to mind as a top rated show that has consistent quality). But I'd rather watch 7th Heaven and it's overt preachiness than Sex in the City with its vapidness or The Sopranos with its violence - both tv shows that are darlings of the critics. And yes, I know those are cable shows, but they win Emmy's just like everything else on tv, so I'm lumping them in. -- posted by Jaynee » Steve_Hat - Re: Seventh Heaven comments.... In response to message posted by Jaynee:I do find it interesting that even you spend more time talking about the negative aspects of the show, rather than the positive. But you defend your argument well and I also admit that the show isn't bad all the time. I does have its funny and cute moments. Perhaps I see the glass as half empty whereas you see it as half full. Maybe our opinions aren't so different after all. Thank-you for your comments and I hope to hear more from you. -- posted by Steve_Hat » Jaynee - Re: Re: Seventh Heaven comments.... In response to message posted by Steve_Hat:I do have a funny thing to mention about 7th Heaven. Basically, my husband is forced to watch the show because I watch it. He is a passive watcher though - he doesn't pay strict attention but just happens to watch when he's not concentrating on something else. A few weeks ago on one episode, the older son Matt claimed he was in love. My husband said, "What's with this kid? It seems he's falling in love with a new girl every week. That's stupid." He walked out of the room after this announcement and missed the scene between Matt and his roommate: (paraphrasing) *roommate looks at Matt scornfully* Matt (defensively): What - don't you believe me? Roommate: Oh I believe you - because you fall in love with a different girl every week!
Yes the show is hokey and has it's faults, but I fully acknowledge those and STILL enjoy the show. The actors are all quite likeable (despite the not-so-good over-the-top acting), and I think that helps, too. Have a great day! -- posted by Jaynee
