» MomAtCwu2001 - Finishing School
I congragulate all of you for being moms in the first place and for finishing school and even going further with your education. I had my son when i was 16. I started high school pregnant, i graduated and am now at a 4 year university to become a teacher and help other teen parents go to college. Of course this is a difficult task because i cant find teen parents, and i dont have a lot of support (i have a few people) A couple of weeks ago i did get my college to invite about 20 teen moms to our school so i could talk to them about college, and it was great, but i dont know if i really got to them, anyone have any ideas?-- posted by MomAtCwu2001

In response to Finishing School posted by MomAtCwu2001:Although I became pregnant "after" I graduated highschool (18 years old), I didn't go to college right away. I was in an abusive marriage and very depressed. However, I did finally go to college at the age of 25 years old.
Sometimes people go when they are ready. They have to experience life (trial and error) and reach a point where they say "this is it," or "I had enough." (Depending on their situation)
No one really pushed me to go to college after I became pregnant and married at 18. It was more of "get a job," "better yourself," and "you have to support the child." But no one ever mentioned college to me.
I decided to go when the time was right for me and my children. (Had three by the time I was 22 years old).
I think that it is great what you are doing. I wish you the best of luck with your seminars and classes.
The one thing that is really important is to let teen moms know the "benefits" they are qualified for when it comes to going to college. Like financial aid (the less you make the more financial aid covers all expenses - it happened with me), and that some colleges have day care and financial aid or other grants may cover the expenses(this is what I was told for me - but I decided to have family watch my kids).
Teens need to know that they are more qualified than they realize, especially being a young mom with a low-income.
Finding teen parents is not too hard. Talk to principals at high schools (you'd be surprised how many teens are pregnant), go to social services and post a flyer(include your email address), post a flyer at local libraries, food stores, or wherever "moms" go.
Good Luck

» avega - My story
I am new to this website, but was excited to hear about the support that it offers teen moms. I am 20yrs old and have 3 great kids. I had my first when I was 14 yrs old. Some people were disgusted with me others just dealt with it. I finished high school with a 2 yr old little boy and 1 on the way. I now have this great job, working with the WIC program here in Topeka,KS. I am a Healthy Start Home Visitor. I go out to see mostly the younger pregnant girls and teen moms, to offer support, make sure they are getting prenatal care, and basically just be there for them. I want to help young moms as much as i can. Here in Kansas or anywhere else. I know that there are tons of places here on the internet to go for help, but I just want people to know that you can e-mail me anytime! alexandria.vega@co.shawnee.ks.usAllie

when i was only 17 i found out that i was pregnant. it was the summer before my senior year of high school. i finished school even though the principle of the school did not want me to. i graduated in January of 2004 i did not get to receive my diploma until June of 2004 i was able to stay home and be with my son.i didn't not have him until 3 months before my 18th birthday. i am not going to be 19 and i am in collage a Riverland community collage i am working on getting my masters in social work and i am working full time. the father of my son is around but he dose not help at all. i live on my own which is very hard to do. yet i am doing it all on my own with out any help from the government or my parents or the father. any one who is a teenage mother i don't think that you should just settle for the least that you should live up to the potential that you were made for. just because god put a bolder in your path that you just don't sit their you should climb over it that is why god gave you arms and legs he wont give you anything that he thinks that you can not handle.-- posted by gabrielseth

I WAS 16 WHEN I HAD MY DAUGHTER WHICH WAS IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR. I FOUND OUT THAT I WAS PREGNANT IN JANUARY, I WAS FIVE MONTHS PREGNANT AT THE TIME AND I WAS SO SCARED TO TELL MY FAMILY. NOT BECAUSE I WAS JUST PREGNANT BUT MY COUSIN HAD JUST HAD A BABY 3 MONTHS EARLIER, AND SHE WAS ONLY 17 WHEN SHE HAD GOTTEN PREGNANT. ONCE I TOLD EVERYONE, MY MOM COULD NEVER REALLY LOOK ME IN THE EYE AND SHE BARELY TALKED TO ME UP UNTIL I WAS 7 MONTHS. MY DAUGHTER CAME 6 WEEK PREMATURE AND STAYED IN THE HOSPITAL 3 DAYS AFTER I DID, BUT IT FELT LIKE ETERNITY. ANYWAYS I WAS ABLE TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL A YEAR EARLY AND I START MY FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE AT THE END OF AUGUST. I GRADUATED AT THE AGE OF 16 AND WILL BE STARTING COLLEGE AT THE AGE OF 17 AND MY DAUGHTER WILL BE 4 MONTHS AND HEALTHY. SO THIS IS A MESSAGE TO ALL TEEN MOMS...NEVER SAY NEVER BECAUSE ANYTHING CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED IF YOU HAVE FAITH AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.-- posted by jackied3031

I feel so alone and confused. I'm not sure what I should do. I am 18 and pregnant. I'm only 3 months but I'm so overwhelmed. I got pregnant from the ONE time that I had sex in a six month span. Worst thing was it was a one night stand. All I know is his name was Chris so I know that I would have to raise my child with no father and no financial support from him either. My paretns are not very well off and are in debt from my mother's cancer treatments. I am currently in University and struggling to make ends meet as it is. Also, I live in dorms with no car or other necessities for a child. Any advice would be welcomed.-- posted by Shayanna
