I was a technical writer for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries for a while. I worked with WAC (Washington Administrative Code), rules to carry out laws governing workplace employers. There are certainly lots of jobs that fit the technical writer mode.

Enjoyed your writing. I'm subscribing.

Thanks, Jerri! I have even seen insurance companies advertize for technical writers. A co-worker worked for one once, so I asked her what they document, since I could only think of documenting goods. It didn't dawn on me that one could document services.

There are so many aspects to technical writing that I don't think I could cover them all. I would be willing to let technical writers with other areas of expertise be a guest to highlight their corner of technical writing. Or, maybe, this topic needs to be broken down into different areas of technical writing.

And what about the Arby's roast beef wrappers that contain directions for assembling the particular sandwich on the inside of the wrapper? I'm sure some technical writer did that as well.

Here's something all readers of this topic can do. Submit an instance of where you see technical writing where you normally wouldn't expect it.

John
