If it is evergreen and small, it only leaves the Alicmandra family. My guess the more common A. Caltharctii.

Is it Illicium anisatum?

I tried to grow I. verum once (the true star anise) and I became very familiar with how it was supposed to look through pictures.

Just out of curiosity, how does a plant commit incest?

I was lying in bed trying to get asleep and listening to the frogs when it suddenly flashed into my mind - "I think I wrote that the Illicium anisatum comits incest. I was not even thinking about the Suite - perhaps you were asking your question and we had thought transfer happen

Illicium - the largest variety Illicium verum is a source of star anise which is used in Oriental cooking. But do not use the seeds of I anisatum because used in quantity, they can kill you. The leaves are aromatic and the bark is used for INCENSE
