» zander770 - "what did your face look like before your parent's were born?"

as usual, elizabeth: great article and "i'm 'down wit' dat, sistar!"

really...i got turned on to eminem last year and downloaded a lot of his music, like "dad's gone crazy" (how much do you think i can "relate" to THAT one, e?!?), "kill you," "white america," et al, and, now, with his "without me" there's absolutely no question of his talent and artistic mastery of the poetic lyric-line (most of my "high-falutin poet friends" merely "nod their heads," at best, and sort of "giggle" at me when i attempt to discuss this w/them, but, then again, they do that when i attempt to speak to them about other things, too, like charles bukowski or TAROT, too! ha!) and writer!

how he "fits" so much "imformation" and discriptive raw emotion into ONE LINE is truly amazing, to me.

also, as an experienced soto-zen buddhist and meditator of many year's (albeit out of formal zazen "practice," currently) i KNOW the many benefits of a mere 20 mins (or more) of meditating (twice, daily; morning and at night); of kinhin ("walking" meditation"); of "work practice," et al, and, it IS a "paradox," of sorts, because, one may say:

"i just don't 'have the time' to do that" or "i can't waste my time just 'sitting' there doing nothing!" and/or worse, while sitting zazen: "i'm not 'doing this' right, i'm hungry, everyone's 'looking' at me, that gal's kinda cute over there, there's the mailman," etc!

"monkey mind chatter" is all that is . . . joko beck developed a method she calls "labeling" that, if "practiced," like anything else, puts a quick end to that!

the "paradox," for me, is that i get MORE things done and get more TIME out of a day when i do meditate!

and, asfaras "scanning" (viz; as s.l. mather's of the golden dawn demonstrated) and meditating on tarot cards? geez, i haven't done that in a long, long time, so, thx for the reminder!

it IS a New Year, no?!?

my favorite koan: "what did your face look like before your parent's were born?" was asked to me for my rakasu test during a seven day sesshin, and it took me over ten attemps before sensi passed me and i received my japanese name: "sekai". (what's "the answer"? email me and perhaps i'll tell you!)

other books of posible interest: _zen comments on the mumonkan_, by zenkei shibayama, and the now classics _the art of zen_, by alan watts and _zen mind, beginner's mind_, by shunryu ssuzuki, the first master of _zen center, san francisco_.

» ecarterb - Zen

Thanks for posting the links and for the comments.
I agree, he fits so much into so little space - I don't know how he does it either (except for the obvious fact that he's a genius). If poets are blowing it off well, that's kind of predictable but they're wrong. His rhyming is so complex; I doubt many of them could do it (maybe if they could rhyming in poetry would become 'fashionable' again- for example: " Ayo, my pen and paper cause a chain reaction
To get your brain relaxin, cause they be actin maniac in action a brainiac in fact son, you mainly lack attraction you looking zany whack with just a fraction of my tracks spun" and " let the beat commence so I can beat the sense of your elite defense I got to meet the fence fruit was stompin at your feet to rinse I greet intensive ladies"(Infinite). And then more often than not he's just plain slick, saying things like: "You missing the key, you ain't even in the brisk of the tea" (Never Too Far).

Eventually the literary world will probably get it and his less gritty stuff will be in the Norton Anthology our children (well, maybe grandchildren) study in English 101.

Hey, thanks for letting me know about the link. They all seem to be defunct - I've had weird html problems with this article over and over again. I'm going to run through and fix it tomorrow am (which will be 1/16)
