Take the Major to represent the way things really are, the Minor to represent the way they appear.3. Lay additional cards on those who's meaning you're unclear on. 5. Do a reading using only the Major , then take the Minor and use them to clarify/elaborate on the cards/situations at hand. You'll get very specific details about each influence/situation in the Major. (~Z~770) i very much liked these ideas, and also the "paired maj trumps" in spreads which you've noticed! i used to do the split-hexagram spread (from: donald michael kraig's) w/soly the maj arcana, and it really helped in learning the "meanings," however, i never thought about doing what you suggest in number's 2 & 5, above! i think that i WILL, tho ... thx! -- posted by zander770 » zander770 - interesting ideas/suggestions, e!!! 2. I think the Tower is a similar paradox. It can represent jail (someone going or in) on the surface but spiritually implies liberation/enlightenment. It could easily represent getting out of jail too (the star coming out of the top in some decks, the 2 figures). I think, essentially, each card contains it's opposite. However, as you observe with the Devil here, sometimes the opposites are very specific.-- posted by ecarterb » zander770 - Re: The Devil In response to message posted by ecarterb:glad to see your post, here, e (i was wondering if this was "achived")! your insights are...great, to say the least...i am new here, to this site, and...mayhap i'll just email you, first, personally... ~Z~770 -- posted by zander770 » Chipka001 - Re: The Devil Hi e... Fantastic, point--you put your finger right on the thing I have been thinking about a lot, in regard to cards embodying dualistic meanings. Of course all of them do this to varying degrees, but the Major Arcana cards don't seem to do anything small. :-)Another interesting point that I have noticed, is so much of Tarot depends on what the reader needs to say. I am not Christian in any way, so when I read the Devil card in a spread, I never see the more "Christian/Western" meanings, unless the person I am reading for is of such inclinations. What I find most interesting is from a Wiccan point of view, the Devil is often read upright as "the Man of the Woods" which generally refers to potent sexuality/sensuality, and the need to make a visceral response to a very important situation. This is probably the most obvious thing to say, but I wanted to pass it along, just in case it is of any use to anyone. Happy reading.

I haven't had that happen with the Devil in that way but have had it mean that either someone is being unfairly controlled by something or is unfairly controlling depending on the surrounding cards. The Tower is a card that to me comes up as equally good and bad - enlightenment and chaos simultaneously. I can't think of anything quite as matter of fact as your Devil experience though, thank you for sharing it. -- posted by ecarterb » SalemBurke - The Devil What a fantastic group! I really appreciate the post -- I just "happened" along to add more to my "combinations" list. During the course of finding these, XV The Devil -- to my knowledge was simply a sexual "anomaly" (viewed from the Christian stance). But you are very right -- it is to represent Homosexuality. This puts an entirely different light on many of my personal readings. My roommate asked me once if the guy she was seeing was "gay." XV The Devil always answered. You are great! The "Lucky Wheel" or "Fortune" represent Bisexuality, and XXI The Universe would be "body modifications." This is invaluable information, thank you very much! Now I am going to gloat over many wondrous things that I had the fore bummed rather dismal.-- posted by SalemBurke » LadyKelien - Re: The Devil I am actually suprised by the idea some would see Homosexuality in the devil card. In talking about Duality and Homosexuality one cannot avoid a look at the Psycological as well. Jung's archetypes fit a perfect path down the line of the Major Arcana. Karen Hanmaker-Zondag says in her book Tarot As a Way of life, A Jungian approach to the tarot, "In principle, the energy of The Devil ha to do with the instict of self-preservation. However, this easily gets out of hand. Hidden away in each of us is the ego-oriented drive that encourages usto satisfy our personal wants. The Devil has no intrest in the comsequences of his activites. he is concerned with his own intrests, not in others interests. There are cultural, and moral values that can keep this drive in line and channel it, but it will always be persent in a general human trait. In some situations, the Devil can be life-saving if you are in the middle of a sever crisis in which you will either sink or swim, then it is the strength of the Devil which, without more ado, can go all out to save you. In wartime, you can stay alive by doing things you would be ashamed of in a time of peace. The same instinct is involved here." Ok with that in mind, one has to ask if this card could possibly apply to homosexuality. After all self preservation is pretty much the last thing on the minds of the Homosexual until the skin heads are knocking on the door of the club with baseball bats waiting to beat them up. The Homosexual drug to his death behind that truck in Texas wasnt thinking about self preservation when he allowed himself to be outted. And yes it was a matter of allowing it to happen. He made desisions that prevented him from being able to stop people from seeing him as a homosexual. He put himself in a postion to be known for what he was despite what might happen. That is not self preservation. This card is meant to show the lengths that human kind will go to in order to stay at the top of the food chain. Not what we will do to become the food chain. Though I suppose you can look at it from the perspective of if you live in a closet you will die. Its the same Idea that Pagans had when they began to openly form temples and covens. That to could be seen as being a self defeating idea. But, the diffrence is that at the time Paganism was protected and is still protected by the law. Homosexuality is still frowned upon in most states. Arkansas has closed down several rest stops and state parks because of homosexual activity in those parks. Those who can be caught are charged with everything from public displays of affection to solicitation. Those convictions no matter how minor are published in the local papers, Details of the activity are still released. No being out of the closet as a homosexual still isnt very self preserving. And until this world accepts them without as easily as they do hetrosexual couples it will continue to be self defeating. This card is about what one has to do to survive in the worst possible conditions. Think the man who steals the antibiotics his pregnate wife needs from a drug store or hospital because he just doesnt have the money and if he doesnt get her what she needs she will die. That act brings into play the power of the Devil. You will see it in the lives of teenagers a lot because they are always being faced with challanges that will change their lives forever and doing so based upon the instinct to survive. But, I just cant see homosexuality as another side of the card. There are just to many factors that dont fit. -- posted by LadyKelien » Lula3 - i hope this reaches you i went to college with chip. i was not able to reach him via the e-mail on his profile. if anyone knows how to reach him, even though it's been a while since he's posted, please do let me know. it would be greatly appreciated. even contact me via my e-mail personally if you don't want to respond here. i've been trying to find him for years. thanks!-Lula. -- posted by Lula3 « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
