I think part of your problem is how many times you've started again in a different class/school. Each teacher has their own ideosyncracies that you need to get used to before you begin to get comfy in the class. Give it time...

Anyways... pullbacks!

Before you do anything - bend your knees! Try to relax as tension will only make your sounds scrapey and snatched.

Try both feet together first. Jump forward a little way - make sure you bend those knees! Keep your weight forward. Lift the toes and spring into the air slapping back the toes as you leave the floor.

Imagine a crocodile snapping his jaws shut. That's what your feet will look like!!

Hang onto the back of a chair for balance when you begin and then stop using it when you've got two clear sounds going.

Remember... bend your knees, relax, keep your weight forward, and don't stick your bottom out!

Hello I've been doing tap for about five years. You don't really have to practice tapping on a hard wood floor. You can practice at school under your desk as long as you aren't to noisy. Another thing is just run the steps through your head. Your not bad at tapping, it is difficult to learn at first. But as you continue in the course it'll get easier and easier. And soon it won't matter if you live in a apartment or not. It'll matter if you love the dance. And who knows maybe you'll surprise yourself. HOPE THIS ADVICE HELPS IN SOME WAY!

» Rugby11 - tap troubles

I've been learning to tap ever since early May, and I've had this problem. Even with the shuffle, my left side just seems more clumsy and slower. I'm right handed. And also, sometimes, my feet don't hit the floor. I've tried making Xs on the floor, and making sure I hit them, but it doesn't really work.

i think that you shoud try getting group lessons that are on regularly, say onese a week to begin with, then build up to more than that.

In response to message posted by Rugby11:

Rugby -

You might want to check with an orthopedist or chiropractor to see if you legs are the same length. My right leg is a half inch shorter and I used to hit the floor too hard with my left foot or miss it with my right foot until I found that out.

many people have troubles with their left side. i have been doing tap for 6 years and when i do my wings sometimes my right side makes the sound and my left side just looks like it is! your idea with the crosses on the floor is a good one i would never have thought of it. maybe you should practise with your left side more? i am also right handed by the way.

I have been tap dancing for 10 years, and one thing I've learned is, if you never try, you will never learn. Tap dancing is a great type of dance, because it is something easy to pick up, and it is a dance that you build off of. You shouldn't just let it go, if you like this website, and are interested, TRY IT!
Have fun! Good Luck!
