Glad to see you back! I've missed your insightful, interesting, and always instructive essays.Thanks for exploring a rarely-examined character, Shmi. If the classic trilogy is about fathers, the prequel trilogy is about mothers, specifically the two maternal figures in Anakin's life, Shmi and Padmé. Thanks also for discussing the relevance of the virgin birth scenario; too many people blew this off as a "cop out" or even a blasphemous attempt to put Anakin on the level of Christ.
Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Thank you for the enlightenment and I hope to visit here more often. Ive been one of the "disappointed" Prequel SW audience but your essay made me see AOTC in a different light. Meanwhile, I always took Shmi's name coming from the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi. Whether there is a connection to that, Im not sure but I like your side of the name even better. Take care.Emperorshuttle

It's nice to see a real analysis of Shmi's character, as I think she is often overlooked. She isn't as noticeable, perhaps, as Padme or Leia, but in her own way, she's very much as strong and as caring as either of them, and she plays a crucial role in the saga. As, lazypadawan notes, her depth as a literary/mythic character can be missed by those who only or mainly see the Mary comparisons, but there's a lot more to discuss.Will look forward to more, as always, Paul.

At any rate, great insights from all of you. I think it's fair to say the prequel trilogy is about mothers too. I really like that. And yeah, I think there is a connection between Shmi and Lakshmi, but I heard the other explanation first. Our boy Lucas does have fun with names doesn't he? :-)
