In response to message posted by ekyla:Magically, an essay on the internet has turned one woman's pessimisim towards the opposite sex into understanding. And the subject of such an article? Star Wars. Star Wars isn't just for a bunch of geeks and nerds huh? -- posted by rugger_71 » Dedalus47 - Re: Re: Love explained. In response to message posted by rugger_71:Well, it's still for geeks, just ROMANTIC geeks. :-) BTW, there is a great article about AOTC by Kevin Smith in Film Comment. Part of it is posted at TheForce.net. He apparently really, really liked the romance. Yeah Kevin! -- posted by Dedalus47 » TPF1138 - Yeah! Yeah! I read Kev's article in 'Film Comment'.It is so great to hear from someone who truly get's these movies. And for a writer/director known for his deft handling of human relationships ( Clerks, Chasing Amy) to really see, and enjoy, the depth of humanity present in the Anakin & Padme love story was quite heartening to this film geek. I know I'll be buying those issue's of 'Amazing Spider-Man' penned by Mr. Smith come January 2003. And I'll be one of the first in line when Kev return's to more mature work (after Jay & Bob Strike Back, and 'some portions of' Dogma) with his next cinematic offering 'Jersey Girl'. -- posted by TPF1138 » obiwanjm - Love the articles Paul,As a HUGE fan of the films who likes to go beyond more than what's on the screen, I just wanted to say thanks for your well written articles. I especially enjoy how you point out the myth-based ideas/origins behind the more nit-picked aspects of AOTC (such as the romance). The constant criticism in all these surface-level reviews, by movie critics that are far to jaded and snooty to be of use to anyone, really bug me. Anyway, keep up the good work for as long as possible. I thoroughly enjoy them, and pass them around to both fans and non-fans alike. -- posted by obiwanjm » desertblue - sacrifice In response to message posted by obiwanjm:I liked the symbolism you derived from the idea of entering the ordeal of love, and being intiated/torn apart by wild beasts. Very cool. There's a lot to think about here. -- posted by desertblue » Dedalus47 - Re: Yeah! In response to message posted by TPF1138:Well, I didn't know Kevin Smith was set to pen some issues of Spiderman, but I'll most definitely be getting them. I have to say, I laughed in Jay and Silent Bob from almost beginning to end. I don't know if I was just in the mood to see something like that, but I recall thinking it was hysterical, albeit in a goofy way. Reading his article in its entirety, I can't say I totally agree with it. I love the way its written and most of the ideas, but I do think he's perhaps being a bit too literal minded and not mythicy enough minded. I think Lucas was certainly going for that high school/teen romance angle to give us something to identify with, but ultimately I'm not sure how far you could push it. -- posted by Dedalus47 » Dedalus47 - Re: Love the articles In response to message posted by obiwanjm:Well, as one huge fan to another, I also like to go beyond what's happening on the screen. I'm glad people seem to be enjoying them, and I certainly like defending the elements a lot of people just dismiss out of hand. What's sad about the critics is they try to be snooty and professional, but never really succeed. If they were competently snooty and intellectual, surely they would be able to find some depth to what is unfolding on the screen. Lucas has said as much himself. Oh well, there's always my articles. I plan on being here at least through next year, although I'm probably going to be cutting back to monthly articles 'round September. We'll see. Thanks for the comments. -- posted by Dedalus47 » Dedalus47 - Re: sacrifice In response to message posted by desertblue:The whole love-death thing was too good to pass up. I would find it very hard to believe that wasn't intentional, although it really doesn't matter to me either way. As for the wild beasts in the arena, I do get an obscene amount of symbolism out of them, don't I? Thanks db. -- posted by Dedalus47 » TPF1138 - Re: Re: Yeah! I think what Kev did in comparing the events and characters in 'clones' to people and events in his own life, ( wheather wittingly or not)was essentialy presenting another set of Archetypes that are more generally recognised by the masses. Besides, surely the job of Mythology is to, in a broad terms, relate back to reality. Or maybe this layman doesn't what the hell he's talking about here. Also, I didn't mean to give the impression that I don't like 'Jay & Bob Strike Back'. I thought it was bloody funny, like 'Mallrats' before it. -- posted by TPF1138 » Dedalus47 - Re: Re: Re: Yeah! In response to message posted by TPF1138:Oh yes. I don't mean to downplay the significance of the whole teen angst thing. I think that is certainly what we are suppose to feel when watching it, giving us a nice emotional line that we can relate to. But just as far as interpretations go, I have to think it was meant to be more mythicy. Still, it was an awesome article. And yes, Mallrats was good too. "Adventure? Excitement? A Jedi craves not these things." -- posted by Dedalus47 « Previous 1 2 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
