Thank you very much for your analyses. I find the following discussions very worth reading.

The most interesting thing I await to see in Ep III is how Anakin becomes Darth Vader.
I speculate that Anakin is going to kill Count Dooku, perhaps because he (Dooku) killed Padme or did something of similar cruelty which pushes/pulls (?) Anakin to the Dark Side. Now the position of the apprentice of the Sith is free ("there are always two of them - no more, no less").
And who else than Anakin who defeated the last apprentice should be the new one? But being the apprentice is probably not enough for him - he himself wants to be the "master of the universe". But Palpatine aka the Emperor is more powerful than he expected. He defeats him (with lightning?) and Anakin survives heavily injured (reason for the helmet). From now on he is tamed and follows the Emperor's instructions.
I think it matches up altogether.

I'm interested in your opinion! Have I overlooked a fact?

Well, thanks for your comments!

I think you are dead on with what you are saying about Count Dooku. If Lucas is really going to echo the last trilogy with this one, then there will certainly be a showdown between Anakin, Dooku, and Palpatine, much like there was between Luke, Vader, and Palpatine in Return of the Jedi. I think it is almost certain that someone will go after Padme. If Palpatine ever gets wind of what happened with Anakin and the Tuskens and his mother, surely the first thing he would do would be to go after Padme. And this time, Anakin would have no one to bring him back from the brink. I think Obi-Wan will try, and the great duel between the two will take place over that. Rumor has had it that Anakin will wear the suit because he falls in/or near a volcano after battling Obi-Wan, though nothing is for sure yet. By the time we get to the original trilogy, it's safe to say both Palpatine and Vader both want Luke as their new apprentice, and would probably have no qualms about killing each other.

Episode Three is going to be great, but for those of us who care about the new group of characters, it is going to be painful.

It seems like "everyone knows" Anakin falls into a lava pit, but I wonder where we all "know" this from? One of the Original Trilogy books? Is this considered canon, if so?

Hi all.

I'm new here at suite101 and first I must congratulate Paul for his great articles about Star Wars. They're really insightful as they analyze all the ideas "from a certain point of view" that many others don't.

Actually, I had never read any article about Star Wars concerning its interpretation, I mean, the deeper meanings and metaphors, and I really loved what you wrote, Paul!

I'm really looking forward to reading more articles such as this! Does anyone know of any other texts that analyze this more philosophical aspect of Star Wars?

Thanks a lot!!!

Good question, desert blue. Very good question! lol, that rumor has been around so long, I can't even begin to imagine where it came from. Actually, I kinda sorta recall maybe perhaps it was in one of Lucas' early, early drafts. Maybe that's it. That's just one of those things I take for granted.

Episode Three = Volcano duel.

:-)

Glad to have you hear magal! I am really happy you are enjoying these. Actually, I'm really enjoying writing them. As far as other texts with a more philosophical appeal, I know that there is at least one - It's by Stephen Galipeau, this Jungian psychologist, and it's called The Journey of Luke Skywalker, subtitled something about an Exploration of Modern Myth and Symbol. It focuses on the original trilogy, and it really goes into too much detail about describing each scene in the old films, but overall it is really good and interesting. If you want something with a lot of cool pics, I would suggest checking out Mary Henderson's Star Wars: The Magic Of Myth, which is kind of giving the mythic background of all the items that were on display in the Smithsonian Exhibit. Galipeau's book can be hard to find, but it is available at Amazon, I know. Henderson's you can find at just about any decent bookstore in the Star Wars section.

Glad you're looking forward to reading some more of these magal. I'm looking forward to writing more. :-)

Hi Paul.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! I'll try to get them and enjoy a lot. The way you described them makes them feel great!

Actually, right now I'm waiting for Campbell's "The hero with a thousand faces" that I ordered some while ago but the shipping takes a lot of time (I live in Brazil).

Hi desert blue and Paul.

I don't have Jedi's novelization here (that's a shame, I know, but it will be fixed in the given time), but a quick search for `anakin "molten pit"' at google found a discussion board with this:

Right now I am reading ROTJ (and trying to spot my parents from discovering that I am on the computer this late since I'm grounded for...ah...yeah) and it said:

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------

"...You should not think of that machine as your father." It was the teacher speaking again. "When I saw what had become of him, to draw him back from the dark side. We fought...your father fell into a molten pit. When your father clawed his way out of that fiery pool, the changed had been burned into him forever--he was Darth Vader, without a trace of Anakin Skywalker. Irredeemably dark. Scarreed. Kept alive only be machinery and his own black will..."

--------------------------------------------------

---Obi-Wan Kenobi, in ROTJ by James Kahn.

I don't think it can be considered canon, as so many people (fans) know this already.

It's nice to know this lava idea came from SOMEWHERE. Appreciate your digging it up.

I'd hope Lucas sticks to his original thought, then, as all this recent revisionist Star Wars stuff on Lucas' part is kinda freaking me out.

Excellent find! I thought it might have been in there somewhere.

I hope you will enjoy The Hero With a Thousand Faces. I would also suggest getting a hold of the Power of Myth series, either on audio, video, DVD, or at least the transcripts. Pretty general, but they make for an excellent intro. They're available at public libraries, at least in the US.
