I myself was very struck with something Anakin said after he slaughtered the Tuskens. It was along the lines of "I will find a way to stop death"....I don't think this was a throwaway line. Maybe Anakin, the chosen one, does find a way for master jedi to retain identity, by giving up their will to the living force, or something along those lines. Obi-won and Yoda - and at the very end Anakin - do 'let go' and die, and are revealed as conscious spirits afterward.

A slave to the dark side would be too attached to power to let release his will to the universe.

I don't know. These are just thoughts. Qui-Gon's voice-over is a mystery, really.

Very interesting. I just read in the novelization about how Anakin himself heard Qui-Gon call out to him, but did not heed the call. Maybe this is also something like ghosts being tied to the corporeal world because they have business left undone. There's usually something like that that shows up in ghost stories. We don't really know whether retaining one's identity is a good thing or not. I for one will be very interested to see how this plays out.

Is it perhaps Anakin himself who is somehow unconciously tying the spirits of the Jedi to the corporeal world. Maybe it's the light-side of the force trying to redeem the chosen one, the one born of the force?

Hi

I'm thinking with myself, is "retaining their identity" something Jedi could do voluntarily?

If so, that means Qui-Gon Jinn knew something that Yoda didn't. Otherwise he wouldn't be so surprised (as it is mentioned in the official databank) with hearing Qui-Gon's voice.

But somehow, later, Yoda and Obi-Wan (perhaps Anakin too) must "learn" this ability.

Now, back into the fact that they would retain their identities voluntarily. Certainly it couldn't be involuntary, otherwise all other Jedi would be kept as ghosts.

Now what did Qui-Gon have that was different from Yoda, or any other in the Council? Paul has noted that Qui-Gon "followed" the Living Force, in opposition to the Unifying Force. Maybe that is it? Is the "empathy with all creatures" something that makes us be kept in their memories (and, in the movie's metaphor, be kept alive with the Force)?

» FernWithy - Parent/child similarities

"Luke looks more like Anakin, but has a temperament that's closer to Padme's. He does have a temper, but it's not nearly as quick as Leia's/Anakin's."

I actually disagree with the analysis of the looks of the twins.

Yes, Luke superficially has Anakin's coloring, but on various other sites, I work with images. If you go to gray scale, you can take half of Mark Hamill's face and half of Natalie Portman's face and blend them, and you can barely find the seam--their facial structure is more similar, and there is a certain similarity in their eyes, though I can't put my finger on what it is. And their respective roles vis-a-vis Anakin are the same... they both serve as angels to him, messengers and harbingers of change in his life, and the protectors and defenders of his soul.

As to Leia, I think that there was some similarity between Carrie Fisher's face and Jake Lloyd's in the roundness of features. She also has the much paler skin of the blondes. Hayden Christensen is the only one who doesn't look much like anyone, though he does such a fabulous job of mimicking Mark Hamill's expressions in many places that you come out thinking that they look alike until you look at pictures side by side. Definitely, Leia and Anakin/Vader have more in common in their personalities, just as Luke and Amidala do.

So... is "Amidala" a true emanation of Padme, or is it just a fake name? (I was very disappointed that she's fallen back into Padme, personally.)

So... does anyone think it's accidental that Shmi was crucified and her death scene was a pieta? And what does it mean that the roles were reversed here?

A very thoughtful reply. I agree with wishing Amidala used that name, not Padme. And the crucifixion/pieta symbolism is quite apt.

Could you include a link to your work with merging the faces of these actors? That sounds fascinating.

I didn't find the one I did for the TFN Fan Art page, but here are a couple.

Angels is a simple wallpaper with Amidala and Luke images. Unfortunately, using images this size restricted my choices, and Mark Hamill's head was slightly turned, which skewed the central mixed image just a little too much for my taste.

An Early Meeting is just a speculative scene where young Leia meets Vader. Leia is created with a mix of Jake Lloyd and Carrie Fisher.

Wow. I now agree with your assessments on facial features. Very nice job on those images, both of them.

On a similar note, regarding looks, I thought it was interesting that Anakin is a tow-head as a child, but then his hair turns darker as he grew up. Luke's just stays blonde. He DID manage to grow up on a desert planet under two suns, so maybe there's an extra bit of bleaching there.
