» vnd77 - Stalking in Illinois

I am a 26 year old female who resides in the city of Chicago and I am being stalked. The fact that my stalker is female and that I only date men is part of the ironic situation. It started back in February 2003 with phone calls from a women that claimed to have been dating the same man that I was. She would call 3 to 4 times an hour for weekends at a time. I tried to find out how she got my information but it was obvious from my then boyfriend's caller id. I never had a reason to have my phone number non-published. I asked her why she is calling me and she disclosed that she too is seeing the man that I am with. When casually advised her that I am still going to see him because he asked to see me ,she began her crazed rampage. I filed police reports with The City of Chicago for phone harassment only to be told that since I was not domestically involved with the woman directly that there was nothing I can do and that was back in June. Since then this woman has busted my neighbors windows out thinking that it was my apartment, she has knocked out all 4 of my car windows, increased her amount of harassing phone calls and all the while the police of my state have not picked her up or apprehended this woman. At this point I fear for my life because I know that no one will stop her. She is relentless and vindictive and I feel like this will me my first and last topic that I will write about on stalking. I am a single mom on a fixed income and can not afford body guards and private detectives. I fear that even if I give up my relationship with this man she is eventually going to kill me. I just want to know if there is anyone in Illinois or anyone that knows Illinois laws that can tell me what to do from here. I have a 6 year old son and I fear that when she strikes again it won't be just me but my son as well.

In response to message posted by vnd77:

There are several books regarding stalking and how to survive it and even how to protect yourself from the stalker. The one I just finished is "How to Stop a Stalker". It was written by a detective from CA. I can't remember his name but you can get the book from Border's book store or they can order it for you. This book was easy reading and very understanding.

I do understand your frustration. Start by filing for a restraining order. It doesn't have to be a domestic violence restraining order, it can be a harassment restraining order. In the state of IL you do not have to be domestically involved to get the order. I was offered one after just one phone call to my Police Department in the suburbs.

You may also start by using *57 every time the stalker calls. This will trace the phone number from where she is calling you from. It doesn't cost you a penny so do it each and every time. All you need a police report # and SBC will forward the phone number to the police department. If by chance the number can not be traced, don't fret, you can call and ask for another type of trace to be put on your phone. It costs $11.50 but when you get your bill, call and question it and I had $7.00 removed from my bill.

Every time she calls after you receive the restraining order hit *57, and call the police. They will eventually get tired of your phone calls that they will start taking actions against her.

Research the IL Law. A lot of Police officers are not trained to deal or even understand stalking. You may need to educate them.

I hope this helps....
