Ryan,I just had this identical conversation with a friend yesterday. I do not consider sports players or anyone else in high profile positions a hero. I think my little 85 year old neighbor lady that puts on shows for other seniors is a hero. She gives 100% and receives smiles in return.
Great article.

Cynthia,
Thanks for the response. How messed up is our society when we worship the ground that athletes walk on? What has hitting a ball ever had to do with being a good person?
P.S. Your neighbor sounds awesome! Now THERE is a role model!

I agree that guys like Sprewell or Iverson are not to be called role models but don't touch people like Michael Jordan. We can do all the talking in the world but the fact is when there is no parents, no church, no teacher the last thing that a kid in that situation has is a role model and you better pray it is somebody like Mike. Is he perfect? No. He doesn't have to be, especially not in his private life, but when you watch him on tv you see that hard work pays off, that it isn't all about winning and that you have to trust yourself. I hope Michael players for a very long time because some kids just have no other person to look up too.-- posted by attiimterrell
