» NYCScribe - YOU versus Tyson?

It has been reported at FightNews.com that a new reality TV show is being discussed that would allow a member of the public to train for an eventual fight against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in a boxing ring. The Hollywood Reporter says Triage Entertainment is in talks with Iron Mike's managers to finalize an agreement. Reportedly several networks have shown interest, and Tyson could probably use the money after being socked with a $6.5 million divorce settlement earlier this week. First M.C. Hammer rooming with Webster Real World style, now this. Can the end of civilization be far away?

» NYCScribe - Iron Mike to fight the Black Rhino???

Anyone paying attention to this supposedly upcoming fight is no doubt rather dizzy by now. In the past few days Mike Tyson has dropped out (officially due to the flu), then dropped back in, only to learn that his opponent had dropped out in response, and then last I heard, dropped back in again. So unless there are any more press releases claiming otherwise, the fight remains scheduled to take place Saturday (2/22) night. If all of this dropping in and out by the participants doesn't sway you to tune in to see if anybody actually steps into the ring, there's also the new tattoo that Mike has recently gotten - ON HIS FACE. Maybe he's strategizing that Clifford Etienne will refrain from hitting him above the neck because of his respect for art. Stay tuned folks. Mike Tyson can be called many things, but boring definitely ain't among them.

» NYCScribe - Stick a fork in him

It appears that the days of Mike Tyson as an elite proessional boxer are officially done. Being stopped by handpicked opponent, Danny Williams, in the fourth round, Mike demonstrated that he simply does not have it anymore. The fear he used to strike in the hearts of men no longer exists. He still has handspeed and power, but if this fails to take an opponent out within the first few rounds, Mike has little else to offer. His stamina is minimal, and his defense consists of a sturdy chin than takes numerous clean punches before he succumbs to them. Perhaps his supposed leg injury rendered him less effective than he would have been, but the truth is, Mike Tyson at 38 is a very pale imitation of Iron Mike at 28 or 18. The passage of time has done him few favors. When the opponent dismantling Tyson is the caliber of Evander Holyfield in his prime, or a great champion like Lennox Lewis, that's one thing. When Danny Williams is the guy knocking you around the ring, it's probably time to get a new gig. At the very least, it's time to put aside title aspirations and plans for big money fights. If I was a member of Team Tyson, I would be lobbying to get him a job as a commentator for boxing on Showtime. The man does not lack charisma, but what he has now officially lost is his mystique. Trying to fight his way back to the top is probably not in Mike's best interest, or in the best interest of boxing. Tyson needs to face harsh reality head on, and that may prove even tougher to do than absorbing punches from Danny Williams. The moment has arrived for Plan B, whatever it may be, to be implemented. I'd love to be proven wrong on this one. But rather than hoping for the near impossible, I'll instead wish the best for Mike Tyson. If he avoids the ring and the courtroom from here on out, everything might work out fine for him. That would indeed be a pleasant surprise.

» NYCScribe - Spin in opposite direction regarding Tyson's latest loss

Mike Tyson suffered a complex lateral tear of the ligament that cushions the bones in the knee joint in the first round of the fight in Louisville, Ky. It has since been successfully operated on.

The injury, which limits mobility, often forces athletes to be carried out of sporting events on a stretcher, said Richard Emerson, the doctor who diagnosed Tyson over the weekend and performed today's surgery. “We repaired four different torn compartments during the hour-long procedure. The fact that Mike continued boxing for as long as he did after the injury is nothing short of courageous. Under normal circumstances the pain and locking that occurs with this injury would make it impossible for any athlete to continue and he would have to be taken out of the game or the boxing match with assistance. I’m shocked that Mike was able to box for three more rounds after the injury occurred and that he was able to walk away from the ring."

“It explains a lot,” said Shelly Finkel, Tyson’s adviser. "Once he lost the ability to pivot, turn, or move laterally, much less put pressure on his left leg, he lost the ability to throw any more meaningful right hands, which had been so effective up to the point of the injury."
