» dancooper - Road courses and life courses

Amanda,

One of the things I had expected I would have done by now (if my life had gone according to almost any of its earliest “plans”) was to attend some racing events on city streets. As a boy I envisioned myself as a Formula One driver. I idolized the drivers. As a young adult, I was an avid fan, and knew all the F1 teams by drivers, cars, promoters, sponsors, etc. But somehow the rest of my life got in the way. I never made it to Monaco, or for that matter, any of the US Grands Prix. Even as just a fan. Your article brought back some very old memory tapes. Thanks for the trip.

Interesting, pretty much the same thing in my childhood dreams, another Sterling Moss fan perhaps? There was also Jack Brabhram (not sure if that's spelled right) and of course in later years one of the best in Jackie Stewart.

Hi Tom,

Its good to hear from you again.

I remember those years fondly when I think about the talented drivers and the constantly developing machinery that made one team the favorite for about four races, until another team’s “new” car took over the role. The names that ring true for me—the drivers who usually seemed to be the guys to beat—included Clark and Stewart, and a bit later, Lauda, Senna, Prost, Mansell and Fittipaldi, each in their respective times. I do agree with you on Sterling Moss, too. What a treat it was to see some of them actually having rivalries with each other as contemporaries.

Today Schumacher is not popular, but he has to be considered one of the best of all time, along with Nuvolari, Ascari, Fangio, and of course, the ones I already mentioned. “Black Jack” Brabham was, for me, a great driver, but a small notch down in talent from the likes of Senna and the others just mentioned. Brabham did win three world titles, as did Senna, Stewart, Lauda and Piquet. Prost won four. Fangio had five. Of course Shumacher, by virtue of his Ferrari ride, is working on doubling those accomplishments.

And now? I can’t even state who is driving what, or which engines are being used in what chassis.

Happy to bring back some memories smile I guess being the young person here, makes your memories, still my dreams. I still dream of making it over to Monaco. I hope that some day I will make it there.

Heh... And I have to be a Sterling Moss fan! After all, my home track has got a corner named after him (Moss Corner at Mosport!) And Jack Brabham... he's the father of one of my favourite drivers, David Brabham. I was lucky enough to get into his trailer a couple years ago. Nice guy.

And now as the "older guy," it is my duty to sound prophetic and wise. I offer this: Nurture those dreams of yours. It is likely they will be remembered long after other, more “suitable,” memories have faded. They will continue to nourish you as long as you can call them up and re-think them. And the retrospect of added years only contributes flavor and texture to the dreams that were.

Dream. Enjoy the dreams. And every great once in a while, consummate one of those darn things.

Dan
