» Tom - Safety First NASCAR mandated the use of head and neck safety devices before the 2002 season began, folowing the investigations of the deaths of several drivers from baseline skull fractures. The HANS device is by far the best, although NASCAR also allows the use of the Hutchins device which is similar to the HANS with the exception of how it attaches to the body, and its overall strength. Many Cup Series drivers who have survived close calls with the Hutchins device have immediately switched to the HANS device, claiming it leaves less soreness and lasting affects after a hard impact.-- posted by Tom
