» HollySitler - I need help.

I am the mother of a disabled daughter. Since January 1995, I have had to fight for her right to an education with Johnson County Special Services and the Clark Pleasant School Corporation of Indiana. In the fall of 1998, she was finally granted the right to attend school. And she was in school until Monday April 10, 2000. I sent her to school on the 10th and the 11th of April and they sent her back home. How have other parents of special needs children been able to fight the school system and win?

We have a daughter we adopted 3yrs ago. She is now 11 and attends a regular elementary school. She is on the IEP program and rotates in between classes. She is struggling very much. She is lost. Fourth grade is so hard for her. We are going to meet with the assistant interlocal mgr to voice our concerns. We feel she will not make it through school .The special needs teacher is not understanding her disabilities. We are hoping with our persistence we can put Alex in a private school for special needs. At the schools expense.I'm looking for help and answers. href="/discussion.cfm/special_needs/35623/240255">message posted by HollySitler:

Hello from Hawaii.
My name is Yolanda Tanielu and I have 2 special needs children. I have a son who is 16 years old and diagnosis with ADHD and he is on medication. My other child is Autistic and she is 9 years old. What I would like to suggested to the parents is, to get their daughter a One to One Educational Aide. This person will be with your child throughout her whole day. Helping with transitions, school work, hygiene, etc. You need to call an IEP meeting with your team and REQUEST to have an E.A. for your child. I have an E.A. 6.5 hours of her day from Monday to Friday. I also have a Personal Assistant to be with her after school, holidays, summer/winter breaks because my husband and I have full time jobs. We work with people and children with Special Needs everyday. So why should our children be any different? Please email me if you feel you need to talk to me. I am also a PARENT ADVOCATE and I fight for my children, clients, and community RIGHTS. I mean business when I attend an IEP and you should let the school know that as well. Please don't give up. Try to be strong and remember, that if you don't fight, they will get away with it and your child LOSES big TIME!!!!
Aloha.
Yolanda

hi i live in canada and my son had PDD autism he's 6 and he receives a partial aid because they feel that he's not severe enough. i have constantly reminded the school of his running and safety. One day his aid was absent and he ran out of the class to run upstairs. I requested that the principal document this incident so that we have it on file and hope that this does not happen again. They refused and thought i was after this for legal reasons. I don't know if i should push this issue or let it go. the principal promised to let me know when any incident happens and he had mentioned two incident that occured right after his missing day. I feel that he is only picking on my child now because i am bugging him for this documentation. I am scared that in grade 1 he may run off in the school yard.
