This archived discussion is "read only". « Previous 1 2 Next » » TwilaG - Soap operas in the classroom In the classroom, I "cut" the soap opera into smaller segments than usual (15 minutes). I would let the students watch the soap and we would discuss what they understood. Then I would give them a script that I had previously prepared and we would work on grammer, vocabulary, etc. Last, the class would re-watch the segment to see if they understood any more the second time around. It was amazing to see the class's listening comprehension grow throughout the semester! It's a little harder if you're on your own to use the soap operas, but since you enjoy the show, it makes it much more fun. For private viewing, I would suggest videotaping the episode if at all possible. That would give you a chance to review any part that you don't understand and listen to key conversations more than once. It seems you can almost always understand a litte more the second and third times through a conversation. Also, have you checked out "http://www.rinconlatino.com" ? They have a bulletin board especially devoted to Gotita de Amor. I also follow Gotita de Amor. If you have a question about what's going on or what someone said feel free to e-mail me. I wish you the best of luck in learning Spanish (and have fun watching Gotita de Amor!). It seems a lot of Americans, or English-speaking students, find this to be extremely difficult. -- posted by diagonal » TwilaG - trilling r's I don't really know if it's genetic, but it almost seems to be! There are many theories as to how to "learn" do trill your r's - the easiest to explain (in writing) is to pronounce both r's with a schwa sound (uh) in between. You pronounce r-uh-r-uh-r fast enough until it becomes trilled. I'm not sure how well that works, but it's worth a try. I have lots of neices and nephews whose native language is Spanish. The trilled r is not an automatic thing, actually it takes awhile before it sounds right. I've often heard people in Mexico say that when a child can pronounce the rr correctly, he or she is advanced in speaking skills. So don't feel bad if you can't trill your r's. Do the best you can and with practice nothing's impossible! Twila Godinez -- posted by TwilaG » rkhen - Hi Twila! Participants must submit blood & stool samples while in Mexico, & keep a diary of any symptoms, so this is probably not for everyone...but still, $400 would certainly help with traveling expenses!
