The Summer of our Discontent: Closing the Southwest: Re: forest closed...Read the article this discussion is about

» desertblue - Re: forest closed... In response to message posted by Red:Thanks, Mary. Northern Arizona is a very unusual place, in that we have a variable climate (it could be a cold wet snowy winter or warm and dry, whimsically)...and also in our five or six seasons. Most places have the regular four, but we also have Fire Season and then Monsoon Season in between Summer and Fall. I don't even say this tongue-in-cheek because it's true. Everyone here has to adjust to these extra seasons as much as one would between, say, Autumn and Winter. So we are experiencing Fire Season right now and just waiting for the three month period of daily rains to commence in July. We just experienced a very, very warm dry winter (to the dismay of the Snowbowl Ski Area), which served to make this year's Fire Season more dangerous. Last year's massive fires are as nothing compared to how we could burn this year, if the forests are NOT closed. I would rather have access to the mountains and forests, of course, but at least the closures serve to make me be more creative with where and how I recreate this year! Interesting, no?
