» spiritalk - What is the Purpose of Meditation?

Set the tone of your meditation by considering why you are meditating? for what purpose? When you identify that a healing of body, mind, or spirit is important - choose a meditation that brings peace and healing. When communion with and connection to a spirit guide is important to your life - choose a meditation for that purpose.

Meditation by definition means to think upon. That indicates that the mind is active and we can refocus for refreshment, renewal, and regeneration.

We have the tools of our own consciousness (visualization, meditation, affirmation) that work to empower, strengthen and balance our body, mind, and spirit for the best potential in our lives. We can function and experience best when we are in this balance.

Begin each day with a simple affirmation to set the tone for your activities. Keep it positive, keep it simple, keep it uplifting. (I like: God is in His heaven and all is right with my world - what peace and calm - keep it simple) repeat during the stresses of your day and make it your last thought before sleep at night. In this way, you are leaving all your dramas, traumas and stresses in God's hands for solutions to appear.

When you have empowered your being, you can move into a time of meditation on a specific purpose and thought. Allow time and space - 5-10 minutes to begin.

Sit in a comfortable chair (never lie down) and reduce distractions - lower the lights, use ear phones to listen to music, and any other you can think of. A prayer of purpose to the God of your own understanding helps set the tone.

Visualize a bubble (similar to one blown from a child's bubble pipe complete with rainbow patch) surrounding your whole body and fill it with white light. This is your protection from interference - physical, mental, spiritual.

Deep breathes bring calm to the physical body. You will be breathing from the diaphram - beyond the lungs - and forming a baloon there (in music you squeeze the baloon to produce that high note) which you squeeze out strongly - seeing it as positive in, negative out.

Breathing gently throughout the meditation, keeps the spirit flowing as you sit and bring peace to the soul. The flow is a feeling of gentle release and warmth.

In the mind's eye (across the forehead) produce a picture of a calm place (a garden, a waterfall, a mountain, a beach, etc.) where you can remain calm and at peace during the whole meditation. Be consistent in the use of your scene. Of nature gives it a special feel.

If you wish to draw another being (guide) into your meditation provide a seat within your scene. Welcome them with a symbol (a flower, or other symbol from your scene) of your connection and partnership.

When finished with your quiet time, release the energies on a flow of peace and return to a conscious state. When ready open the eyes to the environment.

Give a prayer of thanks (to God) and include thanks to the guides who have brought you communion for their participation.

God bless, J

» starclox - A Better Definition of Meditation

In my experience, I have come to describe 'contemplation' as focusing on a particular subject or idea to recieve inspired thoughts about it. Contemplation is 'to think upon.' That includes using visualizations, concepts and to some extent sounds.

Meditation is, to me, something different than contemplation. It is a way to 'not think upon.' Meditation is the process which allows me to arrive at a place beyond thought, a place of 'thoughtlessness' in the deep sense of the word. This practice has been very refreshing and healing to my compulsively thinking egoic mind, and very opening to my spiritual horizons.

I'm not meaning to split hairs, but the difference between the two in this case is very important.
