» biogardener - Tree in clay Your tree story reminds me of what one of my neighbors did. He bought an apple tree in a pot of compressed clay and set it in the a hole just big enough to take the pot. Then he couldn't understand why the tree wasn't thriving. I managed to save the tree just in time. Had him dig a hole with measuring a metre in all directions and plant it with loose soil from my compost bin. I also planted a few chives around the trunk to keep aphids away, and that tree is still thriving and bearing apples 20 years later, having survived the man.-- posted by biogardener
