Thanks, Dina. Thanks for the great suggestions. I might even select one of those offerings for myself. Will the scopes work well in city areas where the lights from other condos make stars and planets harder to spot?-- posted by humorous_sage

Hey Hank! For that, you may need a more powerful telescope. It's a tricky one, getting around the glare from city lights. Even here, a good 45-50 mins by car from NYC, there's tremendous light pollution. Thankfully I took astronomy in college with a professor who had some very sophisticated equipment, so we were able to spot just about everything we needed to spot. And we had a planetarium at our disposal for the rest!If you're serious about getting into star-gazing you may want to invest in a brand like Meade. Their scopes have withstood the test of time and they have some inexpensive options too. Even their roughly $75 model has an output to VCR option so you can capture your sessions on tape. ![]()
Celestron is another popular brand though I personally have no experience with their scopes.
And for up-to-date reviews pick up a copy of "Sky & Telescope" magazine.

In response to message posted by Dantessa:Hi Dina: Thanks for the input. I'd love to have a scope but fear that if I added one more hobby, I wouldn't have much more time left for my writing. My latest spoof will be found on this Friday's edition of http://www.computoredge.com in the "Beyond Personal Computing" San Diego edition. I think I will get another one published the following week.
