Aggressive 8 Month-old Siamese
This archived discussion is "read only".
» adawny - PLEASE HELP! Hi Everyone,I have an 8 month old Siamese named Abby. Her father was Siamese and her mother was a barn cat. She was the only kitten, having no litter mates. My boyfriend and I took her in at approx. 4 weeks as she was living with the mother outdoors and was severly infested with fleas. She is a very social cat and loves to be around other people and my sister's and her boyfriend's dog, however, she can be very aggressive. She doesn't like to be held and will bite, scratch and hiss. She has been getting more and more aggressive. She was spayed at 6 months and although we did not want to have her declawed, we are rethinking that option and may have her declawed via lasers (less pain & recovery time we've heard) I am nervous when other people come over due to her aggression even though she has never attached anyone. I believe she needs to go on some medication for her anxiety. We are trying our best to be patient parents to Abby. We want to learn how we can help her to be less aggressive. I love her dearly, but never even consider getting another Siamese... Any help that can be provided would be wonderful! I can be e-mailed at alix_5@hotmail.com Are there any chat rooms for siamese owners re: advice and commentary? Thanks to all who respond! Adawny -- posted by adawny » nycsiamese - Only Kitten Syndrome In response to PLEASE HELP! posted by adawny:What you are describing sounds like the classic symptoms of Only Kitten Syndrome!!! Has your kitten been raised with other felines?!? If not, and you isolated the poor thing since she was 4 weeks old, she may not even realize she is a cat, and be ailurophobic, which gives you a really difficult problem to solve! Whatever you do, do NOT DECLAW her! UGH! The laser surgery is NO better, just a little less bloody. How would you feel if your feet were laser-cauterized off? No big deal right?!? So, you just save some money on shoes.... If you declaw an aggressive cat, you get a biter! This has been documented countless times! Cat bites are more dangerous than cat scratches, as they are more prone to infection and can even put you in the hospital. BAD REASON to declaw!!!!! What's next? removing all her teeth? Only Kitten Syndrome is a collection of aggressive and other problem behaviors and health issues caused by the lack of a peer-playmate who teaches the kitten what their claws feel like through wrestling and hunting games. There is no way for a 100 pound+ human to simulate this 8-pound-predator play. Your vet may not know about Only Kitten Syndrome because vets are not trained in animal behavior, but it is common knowledge throughout the animal welfare community as it is the leading cause of young cat abandonment. So sad! All those selfish people who insist on isolating a lonely kitten! and then complain when it is aggressive. You should read up on cat aggression and how to cope with it using behavioral training techniques. If you can find a good rescue group in your area, you can try a very gradual introduction to see if your cat can adjust to another feline. Be sure the rescue group understands the circumstances and is willing to take the new cat back! After what you've done, your cat may NEVER accept another cat. Here is a page of hints on how to acclimate your cat to another feline over a period of many weeks: http://www.geocities.com/nyc_sr/introduc... Good luck! -- posted by nycsiamese
