» Sonni - I'm so glad this group is still here. I was a regular for a while at Suite 101 a few years ago. If anyone was around back then, I was the person with a garden up on the 31st floor in lower Manhattan - gardening in the shade! My lovely garden, which at that time was full of perennials was sadly discontinued for two years. I live 3 1/2 blocks away from the World Trade Center and so I guess you can figure out what experiences I've been through there. Our environment was so polluted that not only didn't I open my windows for 1 1/2 years, but I didn't step out onto my terrace. I thought I would never garden again....as I would cast a glance out there from time to time and pretend it didn't mean anything to me. Well, the good news is that this this spring I took my HEPA vacuum out to the terrace along with a hose - and lots of big bags. I had to throw out all of the soil in pots - a job that makes me feel more like a real gardener. It was exhausting moving all that soil. There was no way to know what was in there - asbestos, dioxin, fiberglass - you name it and worse. So that's all gone now - and I scrubbed my pots - washed the walls.. With my limited time - (I have been involved in meeting after meeting for our tenant association and the rebuilding of lower Manhattan, as well as getting the EPA to our buildings, etc. since that day)I now am growing mostly plants that have to come in during winter. Pelargoniums of all types. It was too depressing to look at these pages at that time - but now I look forward to joining in the discussions. Glad to see you are still here! No matter what happens, the love of plants and trees do help heal. My real name is Diane and until I figure out how to change that, it shows up as Sonni ( a nick name.) -- posted by Sonni » Marge_Talt - Re: I'm so glad this group is still here. In response to message posted by Sonni:Welcome Back, Sonni!!!! I've thought of you often and wondered what was happening - and after 9/11, reallly wondered! Had no idea you lived so close to the World Trade Center - very scary. I can imagine that your life was turned upside down. I can also imagine the job you had removing all that soil and debris via elevator down 30 odd floors! Lordy! So glad to have you back and all in one piece and gardening on your balcony again:-). -- posted by Marge_Talt

Yes, Diane...welcome back and do join us often whether here at marge's site or at the Garden Community pages! So very glad you feel like gardening again...what a miserable physical and mental time those living and working close to the WTC have had since 9/11. -- posted by Georgene A. I've BEEN here all along, but the olde dewey decimal system stuffed me over in Conservation instead of gardening and my readership has just CRASHED.....that and I've been so busy teaching BELLYDANCING (I'm SERIOUS) and just LIVING at the Wise Woman Forun http://www.herbshealing.com/weedforum and BECOMING A GRANDMOTHER.....yeah, life is a major HOOT these days...... Yes indeed, woman. You CHANGE that soil and START OVER and GET THINGS GROWIN' AGAIN....like I told you a LONG time ago, I'm a mere hour and a half train ride OUT of the Cement Apple up the glorious Hudson River...let me know when you want to get OUT for awhile!!! And hello again to the OTHER familiar names! -- posted by LadyB » Marge_Talt - Re: I'm so glad this group is still here. In response to message posted by LadyB:Hey, Lady B! It's a treat to see ya' here. Congrats on your new status...."Grandmother"! Is it a girl or a boy child? Belly dancing! LOL! Considering the above...hoorah for you! -- posted by Marge_Talt » Gay_Klok - Re: Re: I'm so glad this group is still here. In response to message posted by Marge_Talt:Welcome back one and all [BTW, it is a beautiful baby says the grandmother of 9 1/2] - I was gone and back within 3 weeks, Diane - can't keep away from the place! How horrible your life has been - If I have only one philosophy re gardening, it is that it is the most healing thing one can do - better than any pills - look at the blue forget-me-nots and lose the blues. It is a pity more politicians and crazy fanatics don't go out and look at the daisies -- posted by Gay_Klok » Marge_Talt - Re: I'm so glad this group is still here. Some days the office has left me feeling so ragged I think I won't go out in the garden, but I do and after an hour or so, I feel human again...it is the best road to mental health by far. Also agree re: the politicians and fanatics...most of whom need to go out and use up their energy doing something useful like double digging a planting bed. They'd be too tired when they finished to get into trouble:-) -- posted by Marge_Talt » LadyB - Re: Re: I'm so glad this group is still here. In response to message posted by Marge_Talt:It's a boychild, Marge, Jicaiya.....to be in his presence is like hanging out with a cross between the Dalai Lama and Winston Churchill. And yes indeedy, being a BELLYDANCING GRANDMOTHER only adds to my mystique!!!! What a HOOT to announce mid-performance "By the way, I'm somebody's GRANDMOTHER!" Not nobody, not nohow prepares you for the WONDER of Grannydom!!!! WHAT a trip! LadyGrannyBee -- posted by LadyB » Marge_Talt - Re: I'm so glad this group is still here.
