» jkeane - coral bark maples

I recently planted two coral bark maples. They are approximately 3'-3 1/2 'tall. I am not sure about the best way to shape these trees. The branches seem very untidy. My first inclination is to thin them to there best branches. Because of their showy bark, I'm not sure if this is the right approach.I haven't seen that many in culture so I don't have any good examples.

Hi jkeane, Welcome to Gardening in Shade!

You can certainly prune this tree for shape, but, depending on where you garden, this may not be the best time of year to do it. If you have cold winters, pruning now will encourage new growth that won't harden off and will get winter killed.

Best time to prune maples (who bleed) is around June, when their leaves are fully developed.

I have read comments that this tree suffers from over branching:-) I think thinning to the best branches is a good approach. Heading back can give you some odd new branching as sometimes plants will throw out new branches at right angles to the old one...very strange looking when it happens.
