Planting Under Trees - Part 11Read the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". » Deb_TT - Hi Marge! The Epimediums are a tempting wonderful little plan Hi Marge! The Epimediums are a tempting wonderful little plant. I have resisted the temptation until I could find out a little more about them. Always worried about plants that spread to fast. The foliage is outstanding and the flowers in your photo make it more tempting. Still not sure if this one is a romper, or if it is a problem child in the Pacific NW, but I sure have admired it for a long time! I see it at the nurseries for sale and almost bought it quite a few times. Enjoyed your article and hope you can help me not to "resist" this one anymore! Delighted you dropped by.Now, listen close...RUN, don't walk to your nearest nursery and get yourself and Epimedium! You will be glad you did. The clump in my photo has taken something like ten years to get that big, so, even in the damper clime of the PNW, I cannot imagine this species becoming what I would consider rampant. As far as I can tell, they don't seed around, but expand sloooowly via underground means. Frankly, I have never dug around in this clump for fear of upsetting them, so I am not really conversant with their underground ways. But, I've never read anything - books, articles or posts to indicate that they are rampant. There was an excellent article in one of the NARGS quarterly tomes (I think it was) a while back by one who is growing many of the species - made my mouth water as there are many more than you can normally find in nurseries. I don't think you can go wrong with E. x rubrum and it is one with the added bonus of the red coloration on the leaves. Can't recommend it or its brethern highly enough. GO GET ONE! (Hows that for a bit of arm twisting?) :-) Marge -- posted by Marge_Talt » Deb_TT - Marge, OUCH! >grin< Ok I will go now! Well at least in the mo Marge,OUCH! >grin< Ok I will go now! Well at least in the morning! I don't know why I thought it was a rampant one. But even then I was tempted! The one I see in the nurseries has the red edging on the leaves, and I don't remember which variety it was. After reading your message I looked up what Heronswood had and noticed they have quite a selection, and one that really strikes me by the description is E. alpinum. Yikes! They all sound delicious. Don't look Marge! Now that you got me rolling, I can blame you when I spend next week's grocery budget on a variety of epimediums? Debra Teachout-Teashon -- posted by Deb_TT » Marge_Talt - Blame away, Debbie! Feed the family macaroni all week and tell Blame away, Debbie! Feed the family macaroni all week and tell them it's gonna be worth it when your new plant children bloom :-)I know about Heronswood's list - so mouthwatering. My basic problem (and I guess it may be for the best from a monetary point of view) is a total inability to make up my feeble mind which to order - so I end up not ordering any! I feel you are made of sterner stuff and can make up your mind, so please go out and get some and when you've gotten the ones you absolutely have to have - get another one and plant it for me as I seriously doubt I'll get it together this fall to get more...esp. considering how far behind in major projects I am at this moment. E. alpinum for sure although it is deciduous where I want to plant it is under a cedar tree since it can tolerate dry shade and it's in an area I don't see too much in winter. Definately your baby E. x rubrum for the winter garden for its foliage and an added bonus of spring flowers! It will go under the big rhody and the helleborus and snuggle in with a Daphne. E. versicolor 'Neo-sulphureum' since it can tolerate some sun. I have a spot that is shady until June and July where it will then get some sun until a few of the shrubs get taller. I found one that I want and think it is the one I found at the nursery, E. versicolor var. versicolor. Thanks Marge, I will soon be starting into the epimedium craze. If you want I can choose some for you! Eenie, meenie, mynie, moe... Debra Teachout-Teashon -- posted by Deb_TT » Marge_Talt - Well, Debbie, you sure don't let the grass grow under your feet! Well, Debbie, you sure don't let the grass grow under your feet!Your list sounds super. Are you going to get the others from Heronswood? You've ordered from them before, haven't you? I drool over their list, but have yet to send for anything. Am wondering about the size they ship - sounds so itty bitty, the d2 pot size. Any words on this one? How do they establish for you? Well, I appreciate your offer to move me off dead center and if I find I simply cannot make the mark, I will come whining and moaning to you and let you do it!! Marge

I think I always check them first just so I can go pick them up and drool over the gardens while I am there! I am ordering all the varieties from them except for versicolor and I am hoping that was what the local nursery has. I am calling them tomorrow to see if that's the variety they carry. If not then I will do a search for it. Yes you gave me the jump start I needed to get some, so thanks! The d2 pots are the width of a 4" pot but the pot is really deep (double?). I really like the pots since it really is good for the roots of plants. Oh I planted morning glories this year in them to get a jump start. Wow they did so well and didn't even blink an eye when I transplanted them Next year I think I will try moonflowers in them since the morning glories did so well in them. For tap rooted plants they can't be beat. So if you do order from them I think you will like the pots they come in and the quality of the plants. Plants do well so I have NO complaints!
