Hi Marge,
Boy does that article bring back memories of High School Bio. Its good to know how leaves work. Makes you appreciate your plants more.
Well the cold has finally come and the plants that need the cold, like the hostas, are breathing a sigh of relief. The deciduous ones have finally begun to die back. It makes the garden look wierd since there is no snow to cover them up. I'll cut them back in the spring. This year I'll need to divde my Gerbia Daisies. They've done well this year despite my enforced negelect. Actually, I guess its a way to find out what will grow for you without fussing.
Keep up the good, informative articles. Happy New Year. Sharen.

Hi Sharen - Happy New Year to you, too and thank you for your kind words.

You know, when I was researching for this article, I was trying to remember whether I'd ever had any botany in highschool and could not bring a thing to mind. All I remember from highschool bio. is dissecting a frog..which I did not enjoy:-) I've had to dig out botany info. on my own hook and wish I had known (realized?) the basics long ago...think it does really help us understand our plants.

Seems so odd to me for you to say the 'cold' has arrived...I never think of Florida as being cold:-) But, your Hosta will appreciate the rest period.

Yes, neglect - enforced or otherwise - will show you who the strong guys are...parts of my garden inform me of this every year:-)

Hi Marge, Another fine article with great graphics. it must have taken you ages to put it together. Am I missing something...I didn't see any credit for the diagram of the dicot leaf interior. Did you draw this up, also? In response to N. Florida...if you want cold, you should be here this evening..it's in the low 20's or teens. We have no snow cover either. My hostas and my young plants probably wish they had fleece leggings for their roots. If there is the least bit of warm sun tomorrow afternoon, I think I'll rake up what maple leaves are still on the ground and start piling them around plants as mulch.

Hey Cercis,

Thanks for the kind words and thanks for bringing to my attention that my image credit wording wasn't right! That's what I get for copying and pasting and not paying attention:-)

Yes, the graphics to take some time, but, personally, I find one image worth a thousand words, so am assuming those kind folks who read my articles do too...at least nobody has written to tell me to stop doing it:-)

It's turned pretty cold here, too...too cold for me to want to venture outside, that's for sure. I did manage to get down to the greenhouse for a bit this afternoon and start potting on Hellebore seedlings who should have been potted on long ago...managed to get through 30 pots, but that was only 3 seedpots full and I have at least a couple dozen to go. I don't know where the will go when potted up! A quart pot takes a lot more bench space than a 3" pot!!

Don't mention leaves. I got the first round up but more fell after that and I have yet to get them off the so-called grass and gravel....they rot nicely on the gravel, making nice humus for weed seedlings to sprout in. I'm hoping for some kind of weather break on a weekend so I can get out and tackle them.

If you're out in the garden in 20º weather, you've got warmer blood flowing in your veins than I have! I take my hat off to you...
