Thanks, Marge! Your photo of the catawbiense rhododendron has finally identified for me the plant that seems to bloom in front of every house in Scranton and all ofits surrounding towns. I had visions of an especially persuasive door-to-door salesman with a huge truckload full of them. Any idea why this particular one should be so ubiquitous here?

I think you hit the nail on the head. This is the Rhodie that many itinerant plant sellers dig from the woods and load on their trucks to go from door to door and sell!

I think they are native to the mountains in PA as well as other states. Seems to me we just saw hillsides of them on our last trip to State College.
