» Gay_Klok - Terrific photos
The photos are marvellous - are they all taken in your garden, Marge. I am a bark person and grow many of them. Also Tibetan cherry, Prunus serrulata with its lovely mahogany coloured bark. I don't polish it with a duster every day as I believe happens in some English gardens :-] though I do try to hurry up the peeling of the old, turning grey bark by rubbing with my hands. many of the ornamental cherries have quite good barkAnother favourite is the almost orange bark of the Myrtus, myrtle, from Peru

Thanks, Gay. Actually, the best photos are probably Chris's...he's a much better photographer than I am and I really appreciate his letting me use some of his. I listed his at the bottom of the 'more info.' section. The older snakebark maple I took at Barry Yingers...would dearly love to have one of those trees! The lovely lichen all came from my Mom's Alabama garden. I have some lichen here and there, but none like hers! Rest are from my garden unless I said otherwise.Prunus serrulata is marvelous. I've seen pictures of it, but don't have one. Sure you don't polish yours, Gay? :-) I've also heard of those who actually do.
I don't know that Peruvian myrtle...do you have a photo of it you could put up for us to see?

» Gay_Klok - Not sure
I am no sure Marge, if I have a snap. It will be quicker to take a new one next weekend that hunt through the hundreds :-] I am beginning to file them by plant name, instead of clumped together by time.I planted 3 P serrulata and underneath I grow creeping rosemary with quite a strong blue flower. One of my great plantings, if i say so myself. The blue brings out the mahogany colour of the trunk
I have two snakebark Acers - one I purchased and the other was given to me in exchange for a few primula plants - not a bad exchange! They are maturing now and the trunks look great

» Marge_Talt - great combo...jealousy and paint
Wow, Gay...that combo of P serrulata and creeping rosemary does sound super....take a photo of that while you're out with the camera:-) Seriously, would love to see it.Do know what you mean about needing to organize photos..mine are overflowing two shoe boxes and getting worn out from flipping through them. I started out trying to divide them into sections but never got it finished...and, of course, I take them out to scan and don't put them back in the right place ..one of my many faults..
Two snakebark maples...I am so totally jealous and that was quite a nice trade.
I can't imagine painting a birch trunk, but people will do anything, I verily do believe. I should think it would depend on what kind of paint was used as whitewash is - or used to be - used a lot on young trunks to protect them from sunscald...whether it did any good, I do not know.
But painting a white barked birch is rather like carrying coals to Newcastle...

I know what you mean, Gay...I've got scans in different files on my 'puter, too...keep meaning to go through and put them in some kind of order so it doesn't take so long to find something...one of these days:-)Will await with anticipation your return when you locate that one!
