Perennial Foliage For Early WinterRead the article this discussion is about

It Barbara, I planted 'Baggeson's Gold' the summer before last. It was absolutely gorgeous. Was. It didn't survive the winter. I'm in a marginal zone 6, though, and the place I chose for it was pretty exposed.Margery Fish talked a lot obout L. nitida in her books -- she made a whole hedge of it, basically by sticking twigs in the ground and letting them root. So making cuttings ought to be easy. Next time I find one I'm putting it near the house, in bright shade with protection! Carol virtually gardening -- posted by Carol Wallace » Deb_TT - Carol, That is good to know about the cuttings! If Barb or you w Carol, That is good to know about the cuttings! If Barb or you would like one let me know. I think I shall try some now to see if I can get some going. Who knows with this mild weather it just might take. If not I will go again in this spring.Debra Teachout-Teashon -- posted by Deb_TT » Marge_Talt - Barbara, Oooooo YES, YES, YES! So when are you heading this Barbara,Oooooo YES, YES, YES! So when are you heading this way???? Marge -- posted by Marge_Talt » Marge_Talt - Debbie, I'd be totally delighted to wait until you are succes Debbie,I'd be totally delighted to wait until you are successful in taking a cutting. Like Carol, I've read that Margery Fish just stuck hers in the ground to make a hedge, so they should be fairly easy. Plants can be picky, though, about what time of year you strike the cuttings. Barbara, If you were asking me about planting in winter. It's possible, but I generally pot things up and winter them over in the old pseudo greenhouse rather than take a chance on what MOM can throw at us a bit later on. Remember, February is usually our worst month for snow storms! I'm just hoping the weather holds until the week between Christmas and New Years, when I am supposed to get some time off and would be able to get outside during the day. Carol, I would think you are pushing the envelope with L. 'Baggeson's Gold'...I think Margery Fish would have been in about our zone 8. But, maybe, up in the corner next to the house you can find a sheltered enough spot. What about where all those yews are off the kitchen patio? Dunno whether that's North or what, but those big guys would provide shelter and the gold would look nice against the dark green of the yews. Have you read all her books? They are amongst my favorites. If I had been she, however, I think I might have strangled Walter (that was her husband's name, wasn't it?) during the first few years of making her gardens! Talk about a male chauvenist! Marge

But despite him, she made a lovely garden. Want to bet he stood over her as she did the page proofs and forced her to change "I made a Garden" to "We"?I know Fish was on zone 8 or so, but L. nitida is rated hardy to 6, and, although I failed once, it was probably more in the siting of the plant than the cold. No harmin trying one more time next tot he house. The north side is exactly where I intend to put it. He was insufferable and I bet you're right and he did stand over her and make her say "we".....otherwise, seemed to me he mostly hindered and didn't help at all. If you can get a nice protected micro-climate for L. 'B.G', you can probably get it to make it for you, even though you are z.5, aren't you? After all, the Hardy Begonias are coming through and they are only rated to z.6. Debbie, If she's out of print, I found this marvelous resource for searching for out of print books on the web, called Bibliofind. Was looking for books by one author for my Mom for Christmas and found a slew of bookstores all over the US and in the UK that had several of them -- all used, for varying prices. Contacted several by email, ordered and that was that! Really a great resource. Barbara, Are you thinking of 'Mrs. Wilmott's Ghost'??
