» Charlie_Murphy - Hellebores pt. 4, Behnkes

Greetings:
Marge, after reading this article and the time it takes (3-4 yrs) for flowering on their crosses, I see why these plants are soooo expensive. Saw some of the X hybrids this noon at Behnkes and they want $29.99. Too steep for me. Why don't you give them a try and I'll take some of your seedlings:-) A plant at those prices needs to withstand 3 kids (with balls), one dog and my neglect. You had some great pictures with this article. How do you find the time? thanks Charlie

Yes, Charlie, breeding hellebores is a long time process. So far, it appears that this is the only way to do it, since they are so variable, they don't come true in tissue culture. Those in the know think Behnke is charging too much for those hybrids. If you ever get out to VA, I believe that Karen Rexrode is more reasonable...but, they are special plants....sort of one of a kind first edition types.

I'd hate to invest that much in a plant with 3 kids/balls and dog romping through the garden...better wait a bit. Much as I lust for some of those plants, that price is a bit too steep for my pocket right now smile But, I may have H. argutifolius coming out my ears if the hundreds of seedlings I should have pricked out already make it to maturity....interested?

Thanks for the kind words on the images! I'm so glad you like them. Well...that's why I get a tad behind with my discussions and am even farther behind with my email :-)
