» dayan - black walnut Hi again!Somewhere in my travels of your pages I found a link to a list of plants which tolerate Black Walnuts, but the page is gone. I remember you writing something to the effect of respecting the opinions of the woman who wrote it. Don't knock yourself out but if you can recall her name, I would appreciate knowing it. Is the root toxin called juglone? Thanks -- posted by dayan » CarolWallace - Black walnuts Karyn, There was a BIG thread about this in Garden Adventures which included several lists of plants that survive - and just this week a woman posted there about a book she is writing about it.You might want to take a peek here: http://www.suite101.com/discussion.cfm/g...-- posted by CarolWallace » Marge_Talt - what grows under black walnuts Hi Karyn,Well, sorry I don't remember that list/link either...mind like a sieve! But, hope you checked out that discussion Carol posted and if you didn't see Jojo's message about her article, check it out. She's put together about the biggest list I've seen of plants that tolerate growing under them I've got them all over the map, courtesy of the squirrels. Generally get the smaller ones out of my garden areas before they get too huge, but have never noticed anything adversely affected. Used to have one in my veggie garden and all kinds of things grew fine around it. But, I don't have any really old massive ones and they may be a different story. Yes, juglone is the active ingredient. -- posted by Marge_Talt
