Great article! I've got a bunch of plants in pots on the side of my house. And as I water them daily in the heat, my husband mutters something about getting them in the ground and I wax poetic about fall planting (isn't that a really great excuse?). But the truth is that last year I carried over several plants in the garage because I didn't even get them in during autumn.

Oh well, it always means I have a plant to move into an unexpectedly empty spot in the garden.

Judy,

You're welcome....glad you enjoyed it.

Only problem with using 'fall planting' as an excuse is that it's just around the corner!

I end up with so many plants in pots I am seriously considering getting one of those hobby hoop houses this year to replace my pseudo greenhouse plastic covered 'A' frame that occupies one of our garage doorways. Last winter the poor plants were so crammed in they couldn't breathe.

My husband just cringes when I even mention 'new plant' :-) He's not a gardener....

Hardly the Lone Ranger, Marge. Although Marge didn't mention one thing about her gardening habits. Where most of us may pull up unwanted seedlings and either move them or compost them, Marge pots up every single one of them! Should you drop by her house you had better bring a truck.

I've seriously been considering potting up all my unwanteds and extras and taking a table at the flea market. Get rid of the things that don't really excite you any more, and make room for the ones that do.And maybe help finance a few more purchases. . . Carol (virtually gardening)

Well, Carol, maybe not every one of them :-) I've been composting Ajuga and Lamb's Ears by the cart load recently. Hurts, but has to be done.

Yours is a good idea and I had every intention of taking my excess to the Potomac Chapter of NARGS plant exchange this fall, but like my good intentions for doing this in the spring, it doesn't look like I'm a gonna make the fall exchange this year either :-( Sigh...well, there's always next spring.

Great idea taking unwanted plants to the flea market. We have a farmer's market here maybe that would be the place to take them.

I don't know if anyone else does this but when I start seeds, I always over sow. When I transplant them out I don't have the heart to get rid of extras so I pot them up too! I give some away but I always have more than I can give away. Perhaps this would be a way to finance my bad habits, or at least pay for the soil it takes to pot the "extras" up.

I have a monumental task ahead of me, and I won't be able to put it off. I have to dig and move all my perennials. Maybe now it will be easier, if I, too, take extra divisions to the flea market. It'll give me some incentive!
