» Marge_Talt - watering shrubs

Holly,

Did you get that rain we got last week? It helped, but, yes, you should be watering evergreens if the soil is dry until it freezes. And, the blinking soil is dry! That one rain helped, but not enough. Reminds me I need to go set hoses again.

It's gonna be rough on the evergreens this winter if we don't get more soaking rain before ground freezes.

Dormant deciduous shrubs don't need the extra water like the evergreens do, so they don't need to go on your "essential" list.

It's short for brugmansia, Sonni - and this is a photo of one of mine. <img SRC="http://www.suite101.com/files/topics/75/..."align=right> I grow mine in nearly full sun - but it gets nothing like that indoors and still manages to hang on all winter.

Welcome home, Sonni!

Sounds like you had a ball in Florida. Your cousin's garden does sound devine. Did you take any photos of it? Wanna post them if you did so we can all drool? Send them on to me if you've got any.

Do you know the botanical name for that vine? Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow doesn't ring a bell with me.

New York may be far removed from the tropics, but I can see where the one light you're going to rig will multiply and you will end up with a good sized "tropical corner" in your apartment! I bet there are even orchids you could grow inside with some lights! I have managed to kill a couple in my time - from basic neglect and ignorance - but I remember they grew in a mat of fiber hanging on the wall. If humidity is needed, what about the bathroom? You can do it!!!

LOL re: your pink bubble parcels and I can just see you chasing the cat while it is madly swallowing string! Just like a cat. String probably wouldn't hurt it and, if it's like most cats, it would decide to barf it up in the middle of your bed in the middle of the night! But, I can empathize with the hysteria of trying to get something done and having to cope with the crisis du jour.

I should think two layers of even thin bubble wrap should do it. If we have a mild winter, that may even be overkill. If not, and it gets bitter, you can always go out and throw an old comforter over the whole pile. You will get a much better feel for what works after this winter, I should think.

It may be your late blooming annual was just waiting for cooler weather? What is it?

Brugs is short for Brugmansia or Angel's Trumpet. If you haven't seen this, here's a site with links to scads of mouth watering photos of the incredible flowers. I have lusted after this one for several years and just got two infants last summer.

They are sun plants, tho' some of the gang have grown them in part sun.

Are you going to try to plant the big seeds you picked up on the beach to see if they will grow? wonder what they are?

» Cottage_Garden - Happy Valentine's Day!

(Meaning: if you add some lace and a bit of red and a few hearts you're all set.) Welcome back!

Anyway. Yesterday Today and Tomorrow is a shrub but I forget the real name. We had it in our garden when I was a teenager. It was gorgeous when it bloomed which is why I remember it. (You know how teenagers are!)

It must be available from Logees because a freind of mine grew one once, just a little thing, and it bloomed a bit. She was sOOOOOOOOOO excited but I rememember thinking, oh that's not quite the full effect as when there is an absolute wide spreading sea of them lighting up a dappled shady sort of glen.

Anyway. Sure do wonder what those vines are -- sound great!

Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow may be seen here:'
http://www.vg.com//vg/timelife/Houseplan...

I will find out name of the annual with asparagus plant like leaves and little bouquets of quite flowers, because my mind has gone blank!

I will try to plant one of those seeds - just got the salt off of the black "skin" - The seed looks a bit like an avacado type pit - so I will try growing one with toothpicks in a glass - and another in soil(after cooling it off in refrig).

Some of the seeds I have are like giant kidney beans; and pods - from the West Coast of Florida (Sanibel Island) where the flora is like Hawaii.

I will ask my cuz if he has photos of garden and if he can send it to me - 'cause I didn't have a camera this year. I told him to check in here but will send him the URL again.

It was 72 degrees in New York City on Friday. THe pots are sweating in their pink bubble sweaters.

More names and id's - after I do the research. I discovered that if I leave this page to do an online search, there is no text in the box when I return... so .... next post.

Regards, Sonni

Sonni,

Thanks for posting that link. I was wondering what this plant looked like. Sounds quite nice. I think many "houseplants" that are really probably perennial in sub-tropical or tropical climates can get huge compared with what they are in a pot. So it doesn't surprise me that the plants at your cousins were high as a fence.

Actually, I doubt that your huge mystery beach seed needs a cooling period. I would imagine it is tropical by nature and probably wants it warm...most plants from warm climates with no cold dormant period like it warm for seed germination. So, I'd just go ahead and plant that one you were planning on refrigerating.

I do hope it sprouts and that eventually it can be identified - wouldn't that be neat! Same with all your other Florida seeds...do you know what the bean shaped ones are?

Also hope your cuz will send photos - would love to see this garden.

It's been in the mid 70's here for the past several days - and I'm not complaining except that it is hard to get in the holiday mood when it feels like spring and I want to be out in the garden! I bet your pink pots are warm and cozy:-)

If you want to go off and look for something in the middle of writing a post, best you open another browser window to do it in because you can't come back...as I have found to my disgust. Also, let me warn you that if you happen to be writing a post in a reduced size window and suddenly decide it would be nice to make the window full size before you post the message - it will magically disappear with the resizing...grrr! I have done that one before, usually after writing some really long-winded message with lots of links in it.

» HollyT - growing amaryllis

Re what to do with an amaryllis after it blooms, cut stems which flowered back to the neck of the bulb. Don't cut the leaves.

Put it in a sunny window and give it water and fertilizer until spring, when it's warm enough to plant outside. Can either plant the bulb in the ground, or keep it in the pot, in part sun/part shade location. Either way, it needs lots of water and fertilizer to keep leaves large and healthy, to rebuild bulb for next year. In September or October, stop watering it and move to a place outside where it won't get rained on. Right before first frost, bring in and put in cool basement or garage. When leaves die back, cut them off at neck of bulb.

Around the holidays put it in a warm location, water it once, and wait for it to start to grow again. When it does, start to water regularly and it should bloom again for you.

Good luck!

» Marge_Talt - amaryllis advice

Thank you Holly! That was great advice you gave Mary...I could not have said it better.

You know, I've got mine in the new greenhouse and one that I was trying to dry off has decided to put out new growth - the dummy! So, I've hauled it into light and guess I'll just let it do its thing.

I also am trying an experiment with one pot that didn't show signs of wanting to go dormant by keeping it watered and in light just to see what happens to it. So far, just leaves...I may be foregoing bloom this year, but I'm curious after the thread we had going a while back on these guys.
