» ALIOUNE - Adobe Soil
I am wondering if there is anyone out there who can help me locate what is called "adobe soil" or locate something very similar to use in its place. I am planning on building an adobe oven this weekend and have purchased all the supplies needed except I am having a difficult time finding the adobe soil which will be mixed with water to form a sort of "cement" type mixture. I live just outside of Kansas City, Missouri. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.-- posted by ALIOUNE

Adobe soil is just regular heavy clay soil. This site will tell you how to combine clay with sand to make adobe soil.

Well, adobe ovens - adobe anything, really - is a bit outside my area of expertise. But a bit of searching found this article about how a couple built an adobe oven in 1998. It was based on this Sunset article (which has a materials list and instructions on how to do it)...and the first link gives some hints on where the Sunset instructions weren't exactly clear.
You may already have this as you say you have all your supplies except the clay.
A quick Google search for missouri clay indicates that Missouri has several clay deposits used for pottery and brick making; in 2000 it was a major producer of fire clay. It appears that some of the better known mines have closed production, but there should still be some source available.
I would suggest that you try contacting some local potteries to see if you can find out where they get their clay and/or if they will sell you some.
If that fails, see if there is a local brick manufacturing company who might be willing to sell you the amount of clay you need. Try the yellow pages under masonry. If no manufacturers are listed, try for a supplier of brick in your area - they ought to know who the closest manufacturer is and be able to give you a phone number.
If that fails, you can buy pottery clay online. Continental Clay Company appears to sell raw materials. They're near Minneapolis; not real close to where you are, I fear.
