» Kirk_Johnson - Great Article!

You did a fantastic job on this article. I never read science fiction and I found your article fascinating. That is the great thing about events; people will sample topics that they aren't really interested in. I expect that you will have people reading this article who would never think of clicking on your topic.

» Arnvid - Ruminating SF

Apart for being an article I truly enjoyed - I have to admit that I'm a sucker for throughout researched articles.

With reference to the Greek roots you gave, and then Kepler among the other star gazers of his time - a time looking backwards to look forward. Kepler write clearly that his roots goes to ancient Egypt - in his time in form of the so called Hermetic books / tradition.

The Greek Hermes, or thrice time Hermes - is the Egyptian god Thoth, the god of wisdom and writing. His wife again Seshat who also is the goddess of the libraries. Thoth are again recognized by the Romans as Mercury - all these three messenger gods as well. Thoth / Hermes Trismigistos is again Gabriel in Christianity and in Islam Jebrel - but that's another story.

My point here is that if SF can be traced back to Greece (at least if one of SF's definitions are used) - it would for sure go back to Ancient Egyptian SF as well. If so - it's not gone, living in Cairo can some days be SF in itself - LOL

Can you understand you got me thinking - that's always one of the results of a good article - thank you. Have bookmarked the article to be able to go back and ruminate soon...
