» Car - Interesting review... Interesting review Elizabeth.I think one of the things that struck me, and I was happy for it, was there wasn't a "Hollywood" ending. I won't give away the ending, but a lot of more traditional (and I use that term lightly as most of them were filmed in the last few decades) Chinese films have the same level of subplots and sadness that was in CTHD. I'm actually thrilled that they kept that. The influences of non-Hollywood filmed movies is really interesting. I hope we see more and more of that breaking through our market here in the US because it provides a different way to view movies. I do agree that some of the flashbacks were rough. I didn't think about it until you mentioned it. I liked most of the action scenes between the girls. But I think some of the ones done with Chow Yun Fat could have been better. Of course, I also had my heart set on seeing this movie with Jet Li in it. The subtitles didn't get too much in my way but I can understand about 90% of it so I was able to just skip over the subtitles. One advantage to knowing some Chinese. ;) The other part is that I've been watching these types of films from China for so long that I didn't even register it was odd. Som of my favorites being a fantasy piece, The Monkey King, and a fictional piece, Dream of a Red Mansion. -- posted by Car » Wolvie27 - My thoughts on this movie... ...are that it had much the same impact on me that the recent Pearl Harbour and the infamous Titanic. They all left me feeling like it was all a cheap thrill 'cause I just watched peoples lives torn apart and I am expected to enjoy this? The only reason I don't dismiss these movies out right has to be the incredible effort put in the special fx that make these movies. But then I have to ask myself, why don't other disaster/tragedy movies (eg. Saving Private Ryan) give me this "cheap thrill" feeling? Mabey anyone else reading this thread can give me their insight on why some entertainment produces the "cheap thrill" feeling. -- posted by Wolvie27
