» CBJ - I agree more or less Good review, Elizabeth. My wife and I saw this movie recently in the theatre -- not so much because we specifically wanted to see it but because it was the best choice available that night.I wasn't really sure if I would enjoy it because I'm not normally interested is "scary" movies. But this one fell into the type of "scary" movie that I do like, that being those with mystery, intrigue, and minimal gore (i.e. "Poltergeist"). All in all it was an enjoyable film and my wife and I found ourselves discussing it on the ride home -- something we don't always do. I did find the ending a bit disappointing as consistency seemed to be abandoned in favor of a deus ex machina. It just seemed that they took the easy way out. I don't want to spoil it for those haven't seen it, so I won't go into details. But you're right: Pfeiffer and Ford did excellent jobs and they really lifted this film above the average in its genre. "What Lies Beneath" is definitely worth seeing. -- posted by CBJ » Wolvie27 - Alfred Hitchcock is the only good thriller... ...and "What Lies Beneath" will never make it into my VCR or DVD player. Thrillers bore me and sci fi makes me wonder, so if a movie makes me wonder, I will label it sci fi, even if its called thriller/horror. For me, thriller and horror will always be dirty words, descriptive of trashy and second-rate, ever since the started releasing slasher flicks. Thats my take on the movie. So I wonder, how did you label this movie SciFi/Fantasy, since my criteria seems to be different then yours. -- posted by Wolvie27 » Robert - Nice Review ElizabethNice job on the review. This sounds like more of a "suspense" movie than a Science Fiction one, but that's okay with me. When the movie "Monkeybone" comes out, I would appreciate your comments here or in my "Comic Book" discussions here at Suite 101. In response to message posted by Wolvie27:Traditionally, Michael, horror has always been a subgenre of fantasy. However, when the slice-and-dice slasher flicks of the 80's took horror over, those ties became rather tenuous. In this topic, any film that relies on supernatural elements is considered fantasy. WHAT LIES BENEATH was a ghost story, so it qualified. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET would qualify, HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13TH wouldn't. -- posted by Blue_Iris
