Such vague symptoms would be easy enough to attribute to "getting older" or ignoring altogether. Thank you for bringing this information to our attention so we can do something about it before it does become life-threatening.

Hi Virginia

I eally appreciate these articles. smile

The way I look at it is all disabilities manifest in 3 forms: pain, mobility problems (body/limbs) or behaviour. Some don't clearly show themselves to the unskilled, some present more risks than others. Some need the spouse to point them out or are lucky to have that resource. smile

There are sneaky problems that are totally asymptomatic or 'hidden' unless specific tests are done or incidental findings made. 'Referred pain' where the problem is not at the site eg leg pain caused by the back. Heart to arm etc.

Overall, there can be any number of reasons for the one complaint...the vague symptoms Deb refers to are hopefully less vague to the clinically aware. BUT do we go to the doctor worried about everything VS it's all a natural part of age-ing I have to put up with..or is that with which I have to put up. smile However its expressed, I'm trying to find a non-paranoid balance. smile

Here's a medical article from a site I trust supporting your article:
http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/181_...

I don't know yet how to differentiate between intermittent claudication pain or from varicose veins and what prompts me to pull over and rest. The tests mentioned in your article would do it. Being a diabetic..I'm up for pretty regular reviews. I do know what sciatica feels like so I do wonder about the others...hmmm... smile

I looked for other related articles. Here's an (informed) consent form on surgery for varicose veins. Check out how one is to understand there are no guarantees of the 'procedure's' success!:
http://www.health.qld.gov.au/informedcon...

and a decent medical article related to varicose veins and DVT:

Best wishes

Jeff

Hi Jeff. Yes, referred pain is present in lots of problems--appendicitis is one that comes to mind immediately, with pain elsewhere than in the lower abdominal quadrant. There are so many commercials in the States on PAD and even one of the well known cardiologists speaks on the commercial, so folks here should be pretty well instructed by now of what to watch for. Fortunately doctors and nurses are up to speed on vague pain. I do think most people seek care, especially if pain becomes too bad. I have never been one to run to the doctor. I really have to be terribly ill to go--my wait limit is usually 72 hours, sometimes longer, and by that time I am usually better. You are correct about varicose vein surgery. It is seldom effective and I would not have it unless there was a clot problem. I have a lot of spider veins and a few vericosities, but they are small and not painful. Thank you for your very good links. virginia

Thank goodness for Tylenol, huh? That is one way to determine pain--at least for me. If Tylenol helps, I am getting older. If it does not help, I start my 72 hours wait. v

I am responding to the article"Seniors on the move" My goal was to retire before 55.I was quite fortunate to have done that and retired at 54.Having the time and a reasonable amount of savings to travel, my wife and I began traveling in our great country visiting friends of long ago,as we were preparing for our 40th class reunion. One friend who knew me well nearly 40 years ago, once hearing the rest of my story, nearly forced me into writing my memoir.Once written and I sent copies out for reviews,it is funny how The LA Times picked up on it and basically was intrigued on how many seniors today are writing a memoir at this time of their lives. The review was one of many who found the book, not only well written, but reviews were stating"A remarkable uplifting story that needs to be read by many" Amazing how events snow ball. The Italian american Press wrote a super review. The Ohio Magazine chose the book as Book of The Month for the Aug 2004 issue.I was invited as the key speaker at an event in Washington DC. Now I have scheduled over 20 library events including universities libraries where they are excited to listen to my experiences and hear about my book.As a senior I now travel all over our land performing to crowds that are thrilled to meet me and find new friends.I receive letters from readers thanking me for my book as it has changed their lives and changed for the better. Please visit Amazon ISBN 097091122X or my site at HTTP://WWW.FRANCOANTONETTI.COM and read for FREE! "I Wouldn't Die" a memoir by Franco Antonetti.
