» biogardener - Create Your Own Retreat

I love going to retreats but I find myself unable to go anywhere because of several aspects of my disability. I have found a way of creating my own retreats, though. Just getting away from home to a place where I cannot be reached by anyone, where I can enjoy the company of likeminded people, where I can take part in an activity which I enjoy and which I would not be doing at home. That's my retreat, and I have several places where I can go on retreat for a few hours at a time. That's better than not going anywhere. And I make sure that my cell phone is turned off to make sure that I am truly away from everyone.

Here are my retreats:

  1. My Wednesday evening women's art group which meets all year round.
  2. My Thursday afternoon church drop-in with various activities including a watercolor group.
  3. The times when I teach art workshops. They are the most special because I love teaching.
  4. Choir practice in a first-rate choir.

These activities may not sound like much to able-bodied people who participate in lots of activities like this. For someone who was totally cut off from people for years because of unsurmountable problems, these activities are true retreats.
