» Laraliz - Apartment Patio Gardens, Too!

Hi, Sonia! Awesome article!
I live in a small apartment community. We each have our own patio/balcony (and some even have screened in porches). Although we don't have the space for an elaborate rooftop garden, we certainly have room for potted plants like tomatoes AND can create our own spice gardens. I encourage others to start a spice garden even if you only have a window box with which to do it -- it really works. Spices from the grocery store shelves are often "irradiated" -- remember the controversey over irradiating milk and meat products -- well, they are doing it to most of the brands of spices on your grocer's shelves (with the exception of FRONTIER brand -- they do NOT irradiate ANY of their spices) -- anyway -- you can avoid all of that headache by just growing your own! Happy GROWING!

Hi Lara and thanks! Glad you liked the article, and I am pleased you are encouraging other city folks to be more self reliant smile
I didn't know that about spices either - but it doesn't suprise me, not much suprises me these days I'm afraid.
Happy gardening to you too.

» Bob_Ewing - Using the Space

Greetings great article. I'm interested in urban agriculture and feel that far too much space within the urban environment is wasted or misused. Rooftops are an excellent example. Cities are growing and the only hope they have of becoming sustainable is to find ways to meet their own needs, locally and food plays a major role.
