Types of seizures...

» punkrock_frog - My seizures I hope somebody responds to this message very soon.I am almost 21-years-old, and I have been having seizures since before I was in high school. I was not diagnosed until February of this year. In the past 2 years, I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. My moods have a tendency to fluctuate. I was first treated for depression with an antidepressant. It made me have tons of seizures. It felt HORRIBLE. I had to stop taking it. Then I got a bit manic. After lithium treatment for bipolar disorder, my thyroid gland stopped functioning properly, so I was put on a thyroid medicine. My psychiatrist took me off of the lithium, too. My thyroid went back to normal, and that's when I started having 20+ seizures a day. (I was taking the thyroid medication and my thyroid was normal. Apparently TOO much thyroid can bring out latent seizures.) I don't exactly know what kind of seizures I have. My EEG showed that I have petit mal seizures. But I think I also have temporal lobe seizures, and pretty regularly, I have some kind of seizure that makes me jerk. (The jerking usually starts in my arms and then moves to my chest and torso.) It seems like every single one of my seizures are different. With one, I'll lose vision temporarily. With another, I'll get migraine-type pain. With another, I'll jerk. With another I'll fall. Sometimes I just blank out. I get really ANGRY sometimes after I've had one. With some it feels like I'm hyperventilating. Sometimes I can feel my heart beat very STRONG inside my head. Strobe lights drive me insane. My doctor put me on Depakote, but it doesn't seem to work. It either makes me sleep all the time if I take enough to get rid of the seizures, or it doesn't work at all if I take ANY less. I have a headache almost all the time. My sleep is not very regular, though I try to keep it regular. I get to where I can't sleep. I think this is all seizure related. When I don't have 20 or more a day, I feel pretty good, but on those days, I have to sleep it all off. If anyone can make any sense of this, please e-mail me at: Theresa -- posted by punkrock_frog » drea32 - Re: My seizures In response to message posted by punkrock_frog:I also have petite mal seizures and I have depression, my grandfather had epilepsy and depression. I was also given depakote and I had the same side effects and it didn't always work most of the time it felt like I took Nyquil, I had stomach acid problems, the drug went through my skin, and my hair was falling out. I don't take it I take certain vitamins in hopes that I won't get any seizures. They seem to have been working for me really well untill I stop taking them so I have to take them every day. Since I read a lot about nutrition and supplements. I have anemia and I have seizures both disorders tie into a B12 deficiency, I haven't been diagnosed with this at all because most doctors overlook it because it is so rare. I have figured out that I seem to be in better health with a B complex vitamin and a B12 vitamin. Like you I have had the twitching of my arms, and all sorts of weird kind of unusual spells. -- posted by drea32 » tonto11 - Re: My seizures In response to message posted by punkrock_frog:I also have been dx'd with bipolar along with seizure disorder. Depakote didn't do much at all for me. It takes time and much honest communication with your doctor before you can find the correct cocktail mix of meds to work for you. As frustrating as it can be - each person requires a different dosage and sometimes different meds (and even multiple mood stabilizers/anti-convulsants) before the moods and seizures can come under control. For me, Neurontin has been wonderful for the mood swings. I have been dx'd with complex partial seizures and the Topomax is hanging in there. May need a change in that - but for now I'm getting through the day. At least the cycling from the bipolar is under control and the depressive swings are milder and for that I am grateful. I watch very carefully outside stressors, make sure I watch things like diet, rest, even the music I listen to, and the amount of time I'm on the computer because they can all overstimulate me - and that is the last thing I need! lol. Hang in there and let us know how you are doing! -- posted by tonto11 » earthage - epilepsy & depression I also have epilepsy & depression. My depression is unipolar but I have never had it under control. I've already attempted suicide twice because I lose hope since I have tried so many drugs & nothing yet has worked. I have partial-seizure epilepsy of the temporal lobe & experience many different kind of seizures, the most common kind being what they call psychic seizures due to the out-of-this-world feeling they give you. Do any of you have psychic seizures also?-- posted by earthage » willowwolf - Re: My seizures In response to message posted by punkrock_frog:Hi "punk" you could be writing my own story to a T I to was diagonosed with bipoler dipoler disorder ,they tried me on meds you wouldn't believe.. the Depakote did me the same way.I have front lobal seizures ..they cause me to space out or become very angry and forget thimgs and even forget who or where I am at times and then I come back to reality to be in unusual places.. I even find odd thing in my closet.. brite flashes of light or strobl lights or lights from an ambulance trigger my seizures too.. Topamax welbutrin.Ive tried it all.. I hope we can all get together and whip this thing.. For many years my family wondered why my moods were so erratic and why I always pushed myself to the limits. Manic/Depressive behavior will do that...I know the rollercoaster ride and it sucks. Sometimes I can't make heads or tales of my life, but I surround myself with people who care a lot about me.I have experienced seizures and have been on Lithiuim and Depakote for 2 1/2 years now. I am so manic at times I need to take 150 mg of Seroquel (anti-psychotic medication) just to get me to doze off...but of course I am up at 5 am bouncing off the walls. I also take clonazepam for anxiety. Not to mention I am in business for myself and there is a tremendous amount of pressure that goes along with it. My biggest problem that I can relate with you are my continual tremors and shakes...mostly in my hands, upper torso and right leg. They are very noticeable and are often embarassing. I can never stay still for more than 10-15 minutes. I tend to get dizzy or feel fatigued on higher dosages of the medicaiton. Most recently, I was on 3000 mg of Depakote. My blood test showed I was about 90 points over the normal limits. Prior to that I was fine. My manic behavior has such severe swings...there are some days I prefer not to be alive...but I press on as usual. The most encouraging words I can give are to focus on today's events and not worry about the what if's of tomorrow. I hope this has made some connection to you. Write back if you feel like doing so. My name is Marc. -- posted by cram » momof414 - unknown seizure dis. can someone read my "whatever" page. i need to know if this is what you were writing about ... is this how you felt .... what do i tell the dr's what test should be done if the cats/mri's/blood works come back ok but 15 people in church tell you and the hosptl that it was a grand mal and so do the stiches in your mouth. any help would be appreciated.-- posted by momof414
