Is it true that they now have special trained dogs that can sense seizures and where can I learn about them?

» mauisheryl - Depakote Sprinkle caps

this is exactly what my son is on, I am frustrated I cannot understand what side effects there are that are real, my son is 6 yrs. old, the doctor seems really good, but he wants to up the dose, I feel really uneasy and no confidence with medicating my son to begine with, it took 5 Years to even think of a second opinion and medicate him, his disorder is supposedly one that has a good prognosis, I am afraid of medicine harming him, do you know anything about this medication? In response to message posted by karly:

I understand exactly how you are feeling, I have a 6 yr old son on a milder medication and I am also frustrated with side effects, I do relate to your fear of having the seizure and you are not there, all I can say is that it gets easier and in time the fear becomes lessened, what is helpful is knowlege and soon more answers and remdies are revealed, so hang in there and know that there is light and relaxation at the end of the tunnel, your daughter will be fine and the right thing for her as far as medication will come. I have been told that in the beginning medications have to adjust and the body has to adjust also, sometimes they try several medications I guess just patience and understanding. There seems to be alot of gray area with these disorders. I hope this helps a little. Sheryl

» Randy9 - coping with this

my name is randy and I am very allergic to all meds ending with zine, well I went to the dentist in October and he gave me one. 911 was called 45 mins later after I had 3 full body seizures in his office. I spent 7 days in the hospital and had 41 seizures. They finally got them stopped with Dilantin and all was well for a few days. I kept having small like seizures like every few days, now in the last 6 weeks I have started having very bad full body ones, and all my head spins come out normal. I have had 14 in the past 3 days and I just dont understand. I am 44 years old and very close to my wife and mother and its like like really starting to get to me seeing their pain and hurt. I mean I have bumps on my bumps on my forehead at this very moment.I am supposed to do this sleep deprivation thing soon and I fear if they dont find a map that I will go off mf rocker, plus I'm a little scared that one of these times I'm just gonna shake apart and not wake up. sooooooooo yes this is all getting me a little down. If I do this thing where I go in the hospital and the induce one will it for sure tell why this or from where this is happening ???
I appreciate any feedback and help here. Thanks Randy

In response to message posted by Randy9:

To answer my own ?s for anyone else who reads this; I had the sleep deprived test (EEG) and they found several abnormal readings in my brain explaining seizurs. I never had seizures before but was probably a border line case with possibilitys, then I was given the medication that I was highly allergic to and it acted as a trigger so to speak, normally seizures caused by a medicine reaction eventually stop with time, however I went a very long time before I got emergency help, so basically this is how I gather it, my body had so many full body seizures that its now in touch with those abnormal brain waves and knows how to deal with them, or not deal with them or something like that. so be careful of reactions to medications people and if you even think you are having one,get emergency help as fast as you can. I guess for me now its a matter of getting my anti seizure meds right and learning to live with this along with some serious blues. But I'm staying possitive and I am hoping and praying that everyone out there with simalir problems does to. God bless everyone

» discjockzo - Seizure Disorders

I am 27 years old and had my first grand mal siezure 1 1/2 years ago. Prior to my whole ordeal, I was an ambitious young man getting started on my new career as a jet co-pilot for an airline. Due to the fact one is not allowed to be behind the controls of an airplane for 4 years after a siezure, I had to retire from the airline.

The first MRI showed I had a pea-sized benign tumor in the left side of the cerebral cortex of my brain. My second was 14 months later, on my birthday, in which case I was officially diagnosed with a siezure disorder, and put on medication, Dilantin. The third happened while I was exercising at the gym. The fourth happened at the beginning of January after just getting out of my car. Then the fifth the very next day. So far I blacked out in all these cases and needed hospital treatment.

Now just this past week, I had my next episode while at work, where I'm now employed in the manufacturing industry. I didn't black out immediately this time, but I told my co-workers what had just happened, that I was not feeling well, and thought I needed to just go home. Then I felt so dizzy, I needed lay on the floor and the ambulance was called. I had more tremors while we were waiting for the ambulance. Finally while riding in the ambulance, the symptoms got worse, the tremors more violent, and then black-outs followed.

Now, since this last incident, I was finally notified that what started out as a pea-sized growth in my head, is now the size of a golf ball. Additionally, four days after this event, I'm having tremors (petit mal seizures) almost every hour.

Obviously it is making life more and more frustrating. I have basically given up hope of ever pursuing my childhood dream to fly in the airlines. Also my hobbies, as a runner and a techno DJ, are being frustrated. Exercise and pounding techno beats make my head dizzy and produce other siezure aura.

My next appointment with my neurologist is next week. Most likely we'll be discussing possibly a visit with a neurosurgeon regarding options for a biopsy and subsequent removal surgery. All I have to depend on is my faith in God and that it's all for a more special purspose that will be revealed to me in the future.
