» jakirk22 - ditto.com kicks butt

I don't know if they've changed a lot around since your April article, but I was just on the site and was very impressed. The database appears massive and more importantly, it's not just about pictures but includes links as well. My favorite thing about it was the fact that it gave you information on where you were going to (in terms of the website) before you clicked. I searched Notre Dame and the picture aspect of ditto made it clear for me to discern between the cathedral, the disney movie, or the college (what I wanted)all in a matter of seconds! I'd like to see some of the big guys do that! Come to think of it, I don't understand why the Yahoos and MSN's of the world don't invest in technology like this for their sites.

How could I forget. It is your opinion that Alta Vista is the best image search engine and I respect that, but I believe there's something to overlooked: When I search on the internet, I want quality, not quantity. Alta Vista might have a large number of images that come up, but check the relevancy and you'll see they pale in comparison to a site like ditto. Yah, maybe yellow sweater didn't come up, but try to compare Prince William or Tuscany and I think you might want to reconsider your thoughts.

» David_Poulson - Beg to differ

I'm not sure how anyone could think that a vulgar expression like "kicks butt" indicates superior quality.

Be that as it may, after evaluating ditto.com myself, I returned a "dissatisfied" comment to the webmaster.

I don't like this site at all. The shower of cookies it pours on you is irritating time consuming and the multiple windows that each search triggers are even more so.

However, the worst feature of all - for me - was the result of image searches.

Well, you can find tons of examples in favor of one or another.
What you really want to do is to explore many different ways to search for something. Ditto really sucks if you try to use advanced syntax (ex: type hurricane+denzel) or refine your search. Moreover, the details on websites are only present in detailed view that forces you to scroll down and down... to seel all results.
But I do agree with you, AltaVista used to have this option available and suppressed it a year ago. I suggest you also try the advanced image search mode that allows boolean or even the entertainment / image search that seems to give much better results if your search is entertainment focused. They seem to verticalize their index, which -if done across their huge index - will be really killer.
