My older brother, 26 at the time, bought it for me, not because he wanted to give me a bike, but because I would have had to borrow his bike again to go on our annual week-long bike trip through the mountains. My family let me believe that my brother gave me that expensive present out of the goodness of his heart, but years later I found out that he only made the down-payment, forcing my father to make the rest of the payments.At the time, 1951, no one had even heard of such a thing as a down-payment.
