Delighted to see you have brought your wealth of knowledge, and your interesting way of seeing and expressing things, to Suite101! It will be such a pleasure to read your articles.

Thanks for explaining these halos. I saw one while lying on my back by the Eramosa River one mild morning last spring. I wouldn't have noticed it if I hadn't been reading. The National Geographic held above my face obscured the sun so I noticed the faint phenomenon. As you suggested, these halos seem to be less common here in the Great Lakes Region, though I see them occasionally.

Here's a question which is related, I think: what is a sun dog?
